Two Greenlee student job opportunities
|
Peer mentors are integral to the success of the Greenlee School’s two learning communities. Greenlee hires separate peer mentors for each learning community, one of which focuses on advertising and public relations, the other on journalism. Peer mentors offer experience and guidance to first-year students. Our peer mentors, who must be juniors or seniors with declared majors in Greenlee, take on these roles:
- Assist in the Greenlee orientation sections set aside for learning communities.
- Organize study groups, social and professional events and out-of class activities.
- Act as role models for students new to Iowa State and connect them with university resources.
Benefits for peer mentors
- $10/hour, 5-10 hours per week on average
- Greenlee peer mentors develop leadership, organization and interpersonal skills needed to become successful, practicing professionals.
- Iowa State University peer mentor looks great on a résumé.
- Each Greenlee peer mentor works about eight hours per week throughout the semester and is paid for their training and mentoring time.
Applications for fall 2021 are due by the end of the day Sunday, April 18. Contact Brenda Witherspoon (Journalism Learning Community), bspoon@iastate.edu, or Joanna Schroeder (Advertising/PR Learning Community) at joannas1@iastate.edu.

The program features competitions throughout the year in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, and the winning students are awarded scholarships and networking opportunities. As a participating school, Greenlee selects the two entrants per competition. The competitions are open to undergraduate journalism majors. An exception to the journalism major rule is made for students entering the photojournalism competitions. COVID-19 and 499A internships in 2021
|
Because the impact of COVID-19 on employment remains uncertain, we’ve installed a safety net for 499A internships. While we anticipate most students will secure a 499A internship, we have a back-up plan if COVID-19 eliminates your options. If you’re graduating in 2021 but by mid-April are still struggling to secure an internship, please make an appointment with your faculty advisor to discuss the 499 summer “safety net” internship class.
Prior to registering for the summer course students must provide the following to their advisor:
- Documentation of six targeted cover letters and applications
- Updated resume
- Updated portfolio
- Proof of attendance at a career fair, or a meeting with someone at LAS Career Services
Once approved, your advisor will provide more info on how to register for this course.
