|
|
Students enjoyed a jam-packed morning of learning, chesed, and concluded with a fleishig lunch and bowling.
|
|
Rosh Chodesh Adar Bet, Thursday, March 3, was Ann Rita Schwartz, z"l Chesed Day. After davening and a special breakfast, students headed out for various chesed projects.
Senior boys and girls volunteered at Cradles to Crayons, junior boys sorted books at Bernie's Book Bank, and junior girls helped sorted at the Chicago Chesed Fund.
Freshmen and Sophomores remained in school. After hearing shiur about chesed and the importance of giving by Rabbi Shmuel Oren of the Chicago Community Kollel and a panel discussion about various chesed organizations in our community, they broke into groups to assemble chesed packages for different charities to distribute.
"Chesed Day provides an opportunity for kids who don't usually do chesed to do chesed with their friends." - sophomore Sam Gorenstein
"It's a beautiful thing that our school gives us the opportunity to do this." - sophomore Maayan Dallal
"It's inspiring to learn about all these organizations in our community." - sophomore Dina Osgood

Students met with Mrs. Michelle Friedman (ICJA '75), former ICJA Board Chairwoman and Current Keshet Board Chairwoman.
|

Mrs. Zeffren's Sophomore Jewish History Class
|
|
After learning about responsa in the Gaonic period, students created their own contemporary responsa projects.
|
|
Students in Mrs. Zeffren's sophomore Jewish History class have been learning about classical responsa. This week, they presented their own creative projects illuminating the way responsa work - both in previous ages and today.
Pictured above left: Ayelet Appel, Noa Gavant, Jordana Zwelling, and Rena Neiger discussed the time frame of teshuvot (responsa) in the past versus today. They showcased a series of instant messages that they exchanged with Rabbi Stromer discussing the shaila of whether or not it was halachic for them to take a job as an Uber Eats driver. Today, unlike in past years, their questions - and Rabbi Stromer's detailed halachic discussion - are virtually instantaneous.
Pictured above right: Danielle Zaretsky, Jacob Friedman, Joey Levy, and Ben Baronofsky asked Rabbi Stromer a different shaila, whether or not its permissible to make ice on Shabbat, and discussed the issues involved in relation to other responsa as well.
Pictured below: Ari Klein, Gabriel Klein, Dory Marshall, and Josh Paskoff discussed a teshuva issued by Rav Sar Shalom ben Boaz, a Gaon who lived in the 9th Century, concerning the issues related to stealing. They then applied his reasoning to a contemporary shaila: whether it's acceptable to screenshot an NFT digital image.

Eight ICJA wrestlers placed in the "Frosh Soph" Regional Championship Tournament last Sunday.
|
|
On Sunday February 27, the underclass contingent of the ICJA Wrestling Team took part in Frosh Soph Regional Championship Tournament at Niles West.
Competing against powerhouse Chicago and north suburban public and private schools, the Aces placed eight wrestlers.
Sophomore Gabriel Klein led off the day with a thrilling 8-7 quarterfinal victory over his opponent from DePaul College Prep. He took the silver medal at 101 lbs.
Freshman Moshe Tarshish finished 3rd at 182 lbs., just ahead of Sophomore Millo Benmelech, who took 4th at the same weight. Sophomore Moshe Seruya finished 4th at 285 lbs.
Another four wrestlers also distinguished themselves, finishing just one match short of the medal rounds: Sophomore Ari Klein (101 lbs.), Freshman Avi Chen (126 lbs.), Sophomore Dory Marshall (160 lbs.), and Sophomore Meir Aberman (182 lbs.).
"We did an outstanding job at this tournament," Assistant Coach Bill Porter said. "Traditionally, this is a very tough competition, as only the best kids from quality programs tend to participate. We won more matches than anticipated. Even where we didn't win, we still wrestled very well."
The four medalists--Klein, Tarshish, Benmelech, and Seruya--will compete at Sectionals on Sunday at Evanston High School with a chance to qualify for the state championships on the line.

Spotlight on Rabbi Louis Fliegelman
|
|
This week we caught up with Rabbi Louis Fliegelman,
Director of ICJA's Dr. Tammy Kaplan College Guidance Department, and ICJA Talmud Teacher, to ask him a few questions.
|
|
Can you please tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in New York City, in the Bronx, and attended Mesivta Tifereth Yerusalyim and Baruch College (CUNY). My wife Suzanne and I and have 4 children: Yael, Aliza, Ellie, and Abigail.
How did you decide to go into teaching?
After college I decided to see what Jewish education was like and accepted a two-year teaching position in the elementary school of Akiva Academy in Dallas, Texas. We returned to New York, where I worked in finance at Goldman Sachs, an investment banking firm, only to realize that teaching Torah was my calling. We moved back to Dallas and I returned to the classroom.
What about working at Goldman Sacks convinced you to return to teaching?
I saw that people were working crazy hours. They were never home, never with their families. Also, nobody created anything. You were only as good as your last trade. Teaching is the opposite of that: you create connections and help guide people.
When did you start teaching at ICJA?
I've been at ICJA since September 1990. I taught Judaics in the morning and up until 2009 Modern Jewish history in the afternoon.
After receiving my Masters degree in Educational Leadership at N.E.I.U., I joined the college counseling staff at ICJA in the afternoon, which included Ms. Cythia Levine and Dr. Vernon Hein.
How do you help ICJA students navigate the college admissions process?
It’s a very individualized process. Through discussions and research, I attempt to assist the student in finding the most appropriate universities to which to apply.
The student needs to reach inside themselves and uncover their passion and personal career paths.
Your Talmud classes have some fun aspects to them: you invite fathers and other relatives to join their sons for daavening, breakfast and learning on Sunday mornings, for instance, and you organize a family vatikin daavening at the lakefront.
My goal is to help the student feel success and find connection/joy in their Torah learning.
Experiential learning is important. There's something wonderful about seeing a student with his father's or his grandfather's arm around him, learning Torah together.
What do you love about ICJA?
It’s a family.
Do you have any hobbies?
Between teaching and college guidance there isn't that much time left in the day. I try to make sure I get my daily Torah learning in to keep my own balance.
Is there anything most people don’t know about you that you’d like to share?
No - I'm an open book!!!!
