Club Hub

Students explored the approximately three dozen clubs ICJA students run each year.

ICJA's cafeteria was even busier than usual on Thursday during 5th and 6th periods as leaders and representatives of over 30 clubs explained their activities to potential new members at ICJA's annual Club Hub.

Students learned about clubs, asked questions, and even got to try out new games and equipment in some cases, and then signed up to join new clubs.

Daf Yomi Club

ICJA's new Daf Yomi Club began this year with a group of enthusiastic learners who learn daily on their own then meet weekly at school to review the past week's learning.

Last Friday, the club's founder and leader, sophomore Jacob Thomas, gave a Daf Yomi shiur to the club on Bava Batra 73. Yasher koach to Jacob and to the entire club!

Simulated School Night

Parents went to classes this week, following their students' schedules.

On Wednesday evening, students got of school early and parents went back to class. Simulated School Night brought parents into our school to follow a mini version of their children's schedule.

Each class period was just a few minutes long; parents got to meet their kids' teachers and classmates' parents as they ran through a typical ICJA day. Teachers explained their class goals and expectations, and in some cases even conducted a mini lesson so that parents got a taste of how their kids are spending their days.

After exploring different issues in small groups, the class came together again to share their insights.

Harvesting ICJA's Garden

Students harvested vegetables.

Over the summer, Moshava Bair staff and campers built a beautiful vegetable garden on the south side of ICJA's campus. This week, students harvested the first vegetables, sharing fresh tomatoes in the Commons afterwards.

Spotlight on Mrs. Julie Thomas

This week we caught up with ICJA's new Art teacher.

Mrs. Julie Thomas is an Ida Crown mom, graphic designer, and past president of the ICJA Board. This year, she became our new Art teacher. We caught up with Mrs. Thomas and asked her a few questions about herself.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

I grew up in Chicago. Today, I live with my family in Skokie. Our sons Hershel and Jonathan both graduated from Ida Crown in 2022. Our son Jacob is a sophomore at the Academy, and daughter Layla is in 6th grade at Hillel Torah.

How did you decide to become a graphic designer?

When I was in high school, I took summer courses at the Art Institute of Chicago. I had a great graphic design teacher, and I realized that this was a good career path. Graphic design gave me an outlet for my creativity in a way that had a lot of vocational uses. I also really enjoyed computers, which made graphic design a logical choice for me.

What do you love about ICJA?

We moved here from California so that our kids could go to Ida Crown! We love the great environment here. I like the philosophy of high level Judaic and secular studies.

You used to be president of the ICJA Board - why did you transition to teaching?

Being part of the lay leadership, I learned about the need for teachers, so when this opportunity came up, I really couldn't say no.

What advice do you have for ICJA students?

We all can help others, and we each have something unique to give. I love the quote by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: "By being what only we are, we contribute to humanity what only we can give."
