Several members of the Kadampa Center Prison Project were recognized in the Winter 2017/2018 issue of
The Nash News, a publication created and produced entirely by Nash Correctional Institution inmates.
Retreat participant and Nash News Reporter Caddell Kivett reported that the eighth annual meditation event, which was held in September, included four areas of focus: Aspirations, Principles, Courage, and Service.
Participants, who sat in chairs or cross-legged on pillows atop blue gym mats, were led on guided meditations. Andrè Smith, an anger management coach and volunteer from Kadampa Center, reminded participants of correct meditation posture and that meditation was "learning to be still; learning to be quiet." It was "…about training the mind," he said.
Kadampa Center volunteers Amanda Henry and Steven Killion also assisted at the event, which was attended by nearly two dozen facility residents.
In addition to guided meditations, an insightful movie was shown and participants were asked to keep the areas of focus in mind; open group discussions followed.
The result? Caddell Kivett summed it up by saying he ended the retreat by bidding his farewells, and left "with a stillness of mind" he only finds through mediation.
Nash Correctional Institute
is a medium security prison located in Nashville, North Carolina, that houses more than 500 “adult offenders.”
Kadampa Center Prison Project
is a group of volunteers who offer prisoner-support workshops using meditation to overcome negative emotions and addictions, to more skillfully navigate life (both in prison and out), and, as appropriate, to develop spiritually.

THE RHYTHM OF VIRTUE: YOUR CHANTS AND VERSES FOR MEANINGFUL MOVEMENT
~ by Denise Flora
Inspired by the 16 Guidelines for a Happy Life and written by Kadampa Center’s own Denise Flora! Pair virtuous verses you choose with the natural rhythm and motion of your days. Rhythm is everywhere – in the steps of walking, the tick of the clock, the beat of the drum or heart – use many rhythmic reminders to recall, recite, review, remember, chant, drum, or move along with a virtuous rhythmic verse.

Heartfelt thanks to our food dakas and dakinis, Elise Strevel, Patty and Maria Stetson, Suzy Boehm and Peter Murphy, who helped the participants survive the fasting parts of the retreat by providing wonderful meals!

A little dharma gem from this morning offered an unfamiliar generosity teaching, so thought to share. “…different ways to offer different elements to different beings. To friends, give with non-attachment. To enemies, give with love. To strangers, give with closeness. To those with good qualities, give with aspiration. To those with faults...
