Immigration Committee Requests

We have a sponsor and young Guatemalan man who need housing starting August 19 or 20. The sponsor is a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley, whose landlords decided to sell their house. He is a wonderful, perfectly-matched sponsor (has lived on & off in Guatemala and started his own nonprofit there) who is committed to providing housing for our recently-arrived friend. An ideal setup would be with someone who has a back house or empty rooms that understands the situation and is willing to offer below-market rent as an act of solidarity. They are looking for: Reasonable rent. Sponsor's price range is $800-$1,400, but the upper end of that range is a hardship. Two rooms if possible.
Oakland or Berkeley--closer to their accompaniment team and to campus.
The sponsor's classes resume Aug 28, so they are hoping to move in sometime August 19-28. I know this is a tight window, but let's think hard, spread the word, and see what housing we can find!
Please email the sponsor, Michael, directly at < > with possibilities.
Both individuals are wonderfully warm, positive, energetic, and conscientious
I have housed and accompanied a lovely Guatemalan family over the last 2 1/2 years. In the past month, 3 of their close relatives have arrived as asylum-seekers. After an awful stint in detention, they are thrilled to be here. The Kehilla Accompaniment Team helped post bond for them, and I've taken the responsibility of being their sponsor.

They are looking for casual work opportunities -- house-cleaning or repairing, gardening, painting, cooking. If you have any questions or opportunities, please contact me, Lili, at either 510-599-3611 or or Juan, their brother, at 510-837-2771. I trust them and have appreciated the fine work they've already done for me.
This is Aurora Levins Morales, a resident poet of Kehilla. You’ve heard me read my work during services for years. Now, other synagogues are using my poetry, too, and asking me to write pieces for them. Learn more here.
