The Third Commandment
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God . . ."
Think of the screeching, nauseating sound of fingernails scraping down a chalkboard. Ouch, it hurts the ears! It should be the same for us when someone takes God’s name in vain. God is aware of our words. He says, “All day long my name is constantly blasphemed” (Isaiah 52:5b).
When one Bible teacher mentioned Jesus Christ, a little girl exclaimed, “You said a swear word!” How God’s heart must break when His name is no longer connected to His loving character. Our children constantly hear vulgar and blasphemous expletives gushing from TV, our neighbors and even our schools.
This lesson focuses on the fact that our speech reflects the condition of our hearts. A transformed heart will result in transformed speech. Respect for God and God’s name begins with a humbled heart.
