This Week @ MUSM is the official student newsletter of Mercer University School of Medicine designed to keep students up-to-date on key information and events.

Mercer University School of Medicine is committed to addressing the healthcare needs of rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. That’s why we have instituted two scholarship programs that are available to MD students who are committed to practicing medicine in these areas.

Nathan Deal Scholarship

Nathan Deal Scholarships are awarded to students who are committed to practicing medicine in rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. Upon completion of residency, four years of continuous full-time medical practice in a medically underserved rural Georgia county is required. The medical practice must accept Medicaid patients. The application cycle will close at 5:00pm EST on Friday, February 26, 2021.

ACT Program

The Primary Care Accelerated Track (ACT) Program is a three-year curriculum that culminates in a medical degree. The program has three tracks: family medicine, general internal medicine and pediatrics. Upon completion of residency, three years of continuous full-time medical practice in a medically underserved or rural area of Georgia is required. The application cycle will close at 11:45pm EST on Sunday, January 31, 2021.

Join the AMA and MAG

Happy New Year and welcome back from the American Medical Association (AMA) and Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) Mercer chapters. In 2019, we started our first chapter at the Macon and Savannah campuses. With the pandemic, we have undergone many changes but are back and ready for the new year! Before we have our first official AMA and MAG chapter meeting for all members across all campuses at Mercer, we need to elect our Macon campus board members for the term 2021 – 2022.

Summer Internship

The Vermont and New Hampshire chapters of Physicians for a National Health Program are pleased once again to announce four (4) paid, full-time summer internships for medical students with a strong desire to augment their knowledge and leadership skills in the area of health system reform. The internship is five (5) weeks and carries a stipend of $1,250.

Interns will evaluate the successes and failures of healthcare systems while videoconferencing with PNHP faculty and a distinguished group of medical, corporate, and political leaders.

Feb 9: Fibroids and REI

At 12 pm on February 9 join Dr. Erica Marsh as she discusses her research on fibroids, which are benign uterine masses that affect a large number of women. Dr. Marsh is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical School and chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She is also the founder and director of the Women's Health and Reproductive Disparities Collaborative (onWHARD), director of community engagement for MICHR, and associate professor for women's studies.
