Dear

Memorial Day typically marks the beginning of the summer season when folks take an opportunity to go on a vacation or change their regular routine in some way. Summer affords Messiah the opportunity to engage in ministries that are not possible when people are in their regular routines. So, while some aspects of your regular routine may be changing during these lazy days of summer, we hope that you will continue to make Messiah a central part of what you’re doing. On those Sundays, when you are out of the area, let me assure you that there are opportunities to worship just about anywhere you may happen to find yourself. If you happen to find things in those places that you think might be good at Messiah, be sure to gather all the evidence that you can and bring it back with you.

As we anticipate worship this coming Sunday, Brenda Weston and the Weekend Backpack Program Ministry will be sharing with us a new and exciting opportunity that will be before us this coming Sunday. I’m thinking it would be helpful to have a van or a suburban to assist with this new ministry. If you or you know of someone wanting to give up such a vehicle for a good purpose, please let them know that we can use it!

When we gather this Sunday, we will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together. In traditional worship, the Joyful Noise Choir will present “ O Lord, You Are My Refuge ” at the 8:15 am service. Our Chancel Choir will present “ God Is My Refuge ” at the 9:30 and 11:00 am traditional services. The Messiah Orchestra will also be presenting “ Doxology ” and “ Variations on a Theme by Haydn ” at the 9:30 and 11:00 am traditional services. Pia Diggs will be leading our Risk worship service in the Lord Youth Center at 11:00 am. I will have the privilege of sharing with you in the traditional services. I look forward to spending the first Sunday of summer with you this Sunday!
Summer Lunch Bunch Program
This summer Messiah is partnering with FCPS to help feed hungry school children during Summer Break (June 17 - August 23). Fairfax County has identified sites where food-insecurity is highest, and FCPS Food & Nutrition Services will be preparing pre-packaged lunches for these sites every weekday over the summer months. Messiah will be supplying volunteers to serve lunch at one of these sites (The Vistas of Annandale Apartments) on a daily basis. No monetary contributions are requested – just your time. Sign up for one day, two days, a whole week, or all summer – the choice is yours! Volunteers of all ages are welcome. This is a great family volunteer activity.

Volunteers will meet at Messiah at 11:30 am to pick up food and supplies before going to The Vistas of Annandale Apartments. Lunch is served from Noon to 1 pm to any child who shows up at our site – including volunteers under age 18. A Fun Bucket of activities is also provided to encourage friendly interaction with those at the site. Questions? Email  lesliecateflatt@gmail.com .
