On June 24’th, northern and central Venezuela were unexpectedly hit with two back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 (Richter scale) magnitude earthquakes. In a country with an interim government already suffering economically, the impact has been devastating. As of the latest toll: 2,295 have died; 11,267 are listed as injured; more than 26,000 people have had their homes destroyed or severely damaged; 50,000 people are still unaccounted for; and water systems are failing, leaving the population without access to safe water. 

Using funds allocated to emergency aid and disaster relief from Old North Church’s capital campaign, the Outreach Ministry Board is donating $1,000 to organizations now active on the ground in Venezuelan recovery efforts. We are specifically funding All Hands and Hearts, a 4-star charity highly rated for their responsiveness in disaster relief working with local organizations as well as for having a focus on getting children back to school. We are also funding World Central Kitchen, who are also already on the ground as they have been in Gaza, Ukraine, and other sites in need of healthy food and water. 



In addition to these organizations, we can recommend Global Empowerment Mission, another 4-star rated charity recommended by the Associated Press, Time magazine, and ABC for their relief work on the ground in Venezuela. We encourage all in the congregation who would like to donate to relief work in Venezuela to consider a donation as well to these worthy organizations.

On Sunday, June 7th, our congregation welcomed seven families into our church as new and transferring members. They are Don and Maria Hall; Larissa Cartwright and daughter, Aviana; Andrea and Erik Mygrant and son, Turner and daughter, Darien; Nancy Slamet; Anastasia and Bart Lowden and daughters, Aurora and Skye; Michael Bender and Zameera Fida and sons, Simon and William; and transferring member Dale Bruce. Each has provided us with a little description of themselves and their families in order for us to get to know them better. "Spotlight on New Members" will feature each family over the next few newsletters. Please help us welcome them into our fold.

Maria writes, "During our 38 years of marriage we have lived in several states. We moved to Marblehead, most recently from Back Bay to be closer to our children and grandchildren. We have four grown children and 3 grandchildren with one on the way. Don has been a sales executive in the beverage industry and I have been a stay-at-home mom and later worked for various luxury designers in the fashion industry. Don is originally from East Lansing, Michigan and I am from Winnipeg, Canada. Don is a runner and we are avid walkers. We are so thankful to have found Old North."

"Hello everyone! I'm so happy to have found a church home at Old North. As a life-long member of the United Church of Canada, I was thrilled to learn there was a sister United Church of Christ just down the street from my apartment. I moved to Marblehead in January 2025 and joined virtual services until the fall when I started attending the 8am contemplative service.  

I am so grateful for the spiritual oasis and community connections Old North has provided me during this challenging time. The current socio-political climate directly impacts many people I care about, including the Latinx immigrant community. I currently work at a community health center in East Boston, and have worked for over thirty years with immigrants and refugees in Canada and throughout the world.  

When I feel heavy hearted, Old North helps lift my spirits and keeps my faith alive. Christ's teachings remind me that the peace of God is available to us at any moment, and that transformation and healing are always possible at the individual, family, community and societal levels. I am blessed to be part of a church that lives the values of love, justice, and peace in the face of great adversity and moral crisis.

Rev. Christine is away on continuing education as a Winks Fellow to the Heal the World Summit in California, focusing on centering children in worship and intergenerational storytelling.

The Narthex Display for Summer

America's 250th!

"First Church Members in the Revolution”

In honor of America’s birthday, the narthex display through the summer features historical members of the congregation who were heroes in the cause for Independence as well as modern ones who portray them.

A monastic practice of scripture, reflection and prayer dating back to the 4^th century, at Old North lectio divina has been adapted and practiced for more than ten years every Tuesday morning from 9 to about 10:30 am. We all take turns being the leader to select the readings.

We have welcomed newcomers, some not from Old North, who seem to find soul food in the practice and the shared reflections that are part of it. 

We meet at 9 am both in person in the “Great Room” on Stacey St. and on Zoom.

We begin each meeting with a context-setting call to worship. Then we pair a scripture reading with a poem, chosen by the leader for the day and read aloud. We then move into 21 minutes of silent meditation, marked by chimes, and finally we share in “safe space” our responses – personal and intellectual. We end each session with prayers for healing and the Lord’s Prayer.



It is a rich time of being together in community and quite like no other. We invite you to give it a try.

Summer is here and we have moved our eight o'clock service to Marblehead's beautiful Chandler Hovey Park, from Sunday, June 21st to Sunday, September 6th, 2026.  The Welcome/Nurturing Committee of the Community Life Ministry Board will be providing coffee and homemade goodies after the service. 

Bring your own chairs or blankets, dress as you please, bring your furry friend.... just come and immerse yourself in the beauty that God has created. Then stay for coffee and a chat with friends. As we have done in the past, and in keeping with the church's commitment to sustainability, all service goods used will be carried out and composted. Better yet, bring your own coffee cup to further preserve this beautiful planet that the Lord has given us.

As in the past, if it is raining at 8 am, the service will be moved to the Sanctuary. Look for the sandwich board sign at the Devereux Beach entrance: if green, go to the Lighthouse; if red, the service will be held in the Sanctuary.
