An Invitation To Tell the Stories of Peace
from the Rev. David Pattee, pastor

The PUCC Moderators join me in asking all members of our church to participate in telling the Stories of Peace, your stories of creative difference and common cause through which we would build up the community of faith and its witness to the love of God in whom we are One. Specifically, we are asking you to join one of the Peace Pods that will meet once a week for an hour and a half, three consecutive weeks in the month of May. Online registration starts next Thursday. The link will appear on our website, www.PeaceUnited.org, and be sent to you in next week’s e-newsletter. For more info, use this link to READ MORE
Moderator's Notes

Hello again after a week off. Bonnie and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with a trip down the coast, a hot air balloon ride, kayaking in Morro Bay, good food and more. A very pleasant sort of stacation but not quite stay at home.

This is an exciting time at Peace UCC as we are poised to begin several new initiatives. Reverend Pattee is organizing “Stories of Peace” and the Moderator’s Group has determined to sponsor and support the project in every way possible. It is part fo the interim work we never undertook as we had intended with Reverend Lake...READ MORE!

Our Local Author

Doug Owen has just published a book for 6-12 year olds - “The Pond Story”, through Bookshop Santa Cruz. It’s reminiscent of “The Wind in the Willows”, and features a group of friends - including a fire salamander, newt, water vole, coot, and a variety of other pond life, and lucky for them, a water sprite and her invaluable magical powers. They get together to deal with the local island mayor who is becoming more unpleasant and difficult to deal with. It’s a cool story, and the kids love it!

You can read more about it on the Bookshop web site: bookshopsantacruz.com and on the facebook page under facebook.com/dougowenstories
Meal Train Request for Maddie Stober & Family

They live in Watsonville and welcome home cooked or restaurant meals delivered. In addition, donations are welcome. To sign up, just click on the calendar in this link.

In addition, Maddie and Trevor would appreciate someone to play in their beautiful backyard with Jade (5) and Milo (3) for a couple hours on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Masks, please.

Joyce Cunningham shared this memorable poem by e. e. cummings

i thank You God

i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any—lifted from the no
of allnothing—human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

if you listen carefully, you can hear her breathing."

Prophets of Hope is partnering with STAR, a new reentry program for youth. This program received a three year grant in 2020 to assist youth as they return to our
community from a period of incarceration or group home. STAR case navigators meet with the youth and family prior to a youth’s release and completes a needs assessment.

Once a youth is released, STAR navigators assist youth in obtaining identification, employment, enrolling in school and health care. STAR’s funding began in the middle of the pandemic and some of the basic needs the youth and their families would require was not anticipated. Food insecurity is currently a number one concern.

Also, transportation costs for youth to get to counseling, school and other resources is an area not anticipated by the grant. Prophets of Hope has offered to provide grocery gift cards and/or bus passes to the STAR program. The youth’s case navigators will distribute them as needed.

POH hopes in the future to be able to provide a welcome back gift basket (school
supplies, t-shirts, socks, and personal care items) for a newly released youth. And, when appropriate health-wise, POH may have volunteers working with STAR youth.

We know that providing youth with resources and services increase their chances for a successful reintegration into the community; however, if they cannot get to the resources and/or are hungry their success will be elusive.

If you would like to assist POH’s support of STAR please send donations to Peace UCC (memo: Jail Ministry), 900 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 or through PayPal.

POH will purchase the grocery gift cards and/or bus passes.
Thank you for supporting the youth of our community. If you have any questions,

Thank you to Rev. Matt Broadbent for sharing this prayer and for those of you who asked for prayers:

O God, You who are always doing a new thing,
we confess that we sometimes close windows
against the fresh air of new ideas,
against the noise of other people’s worries,
against the winds of change;
we confess that we often draw the curtains
against people who are different,
against world news or community concerns.

Today, we ask for prayers for:

  • The soul of Linda Appleton and comfort for her friends and family. Linda passed away on Sunday, April 4.
  • All those battling loneliness and depression in these loneliest times
  • On-going prayers for Lisa Johnson’s husband, Richard, for their extended family. Prayers for all those in need of a supportive & loving community everywhere
  • Prayers for teachers, and preachers, and all those who are handling extra work burdens during the pandemic.
  • We offer prayers for all those who are out of work because of the pandemic and the financial stress created.
  • Prayers for wisdom and justice in Minneapolis during the trial of Derek Chauvin and the recent shooting of Daunte Wright.

Forgive us our insulation in our locked homes,
our shuttered churches, the security systems on our hearts.
Open up our lives, and let your Spirit blow through. Amen.

Many blessings,
Bonnie Lange

Sign Up to Be A Liturgist!

We would love to have you as a liturgist (reader) in one of our Sunday morning worship videos. It's a wonderful way of serving, it's nice for people to see you, and it allows Pastor Dave a chance to visit with you for a few minutes!

In order to do this, you'll need:
  • One hour available for recording on a Wednesday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer equipped with a camera and microphone that allow you to use Zoom (sorry, but cell phones just don't work well for our purposes)

On the Monday preceding the Wednesday for which you sign up, we'll send an
e-mail with your readings, easy-to-follow setup instructions, and a Zoom link. It's that simple.

So, if you'd like to give it a try, click on this link to choose a date and time.
We Want Your Face!

Most of us cringe when we see ourselves in photos, but you probably have one photo that shows your face the way you would like other people to see it. We want that photo for our records! Pastor Dave especially is interested in having a pictorial record because there are so many of you he hasn't yet been able to meet in person.

Here's how you do it...please email Devon a digital photo of yourself and she will take care of the rest! Thank you. We look forward to "seeing" you soon.
Office Hours!

Some days we're on campus, some days we're remote, but 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, staff are attending to the business of our church office: monitoring e-mail, answering telephones and/or responding to messages, working on the dozens of different projects and connections that keep our ministry moving forward. You can reach us by e-mail, office@PeaceUnited.org, or by phone, 831-426-2010.

Pastor Dave also is working out of the church office, Monday through Thursday, and most weeks will have office hours on Saturday too, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday is his day off. In case of emergency, the pastor is available by cell phone, 773-255-8095. If you would like to schedule a meeting or would like to "drop by", please contact us via email using this link to make an arrangement.

Buildings & Grounds Needs Your
"Free Service Tags"

Every City of Santa Cruz resident with refuse service gets four “Free Service Tags” annually, good for extra curbside trash or a free “dump run” at the city dump. Most of us don’t need these tags and they remain unused.

Your Buildings and Grounds team can put these Tags to good use, though! As you might imagine, our 6-acre campus generates a lot more yard waste than will fit in the curbside carts, and we make frequent dump runs.

If you have City “Free Service Tags” that you won’t use, please consider donating them to the church. Just mail or drop them off at the church office, and receive our heartfelt thanks!

We're registered on Amazon Smile! Learn more and designate Peace UCC as your chosen charity to receive 0.5% of your Amazon Smile purchases, at no cost to you, here.

Our conference staff and the offices have
moved to a new address. The new address is
1320 Willow Pass Rd., Suite 600, Concord, CA 94520
