A note from Pastor Dave
Happy Thanksgiving!

There's something wonderful in all of the holidays, but the one in which I've always found the most relaxed and refreshing pleasure is Thanksgiving. It will be different this year, and there will be a lot that I miss, but I'm going to do everything I can, for myself and others, to have a Happy Thanksgiving!

The best of our Thanksgiving traditions call up a deeper meaning and purpose that make it a truly holy day for people of different faiths, and people who wouldn't think of themselves as religious at all. None of us will be able to keep all of our traditions this year, but we can honor the substance of those traditions in whatever we do. When we connect to name our blessings out loud, to celebrate generosity and to care for those who are hungry or lost or alone, when we remember our elders and dote on our children, grateful for the goodness we share and renewing our identity in God's will for justice and peace... when we do these things we enter a sacred time and space of joy in which God is truly praised. That's a Happy Thanksgiving!

The very best we have begins with a gift fulfilled in the sharing: our lives, the creation of which we are a part, and the love that makes it all good! Revel in the gift. Be grateful. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Peace’s STEWARDS? Every one of us!

A Pledge Form for January through June, 2021, should arrive in your mailbox this week. A digital pledge form can be downloaded at https://www.peaceunited.org/pledge.
Programs? Staff and tech to make them happen? Site maintained? We need to know what funding base we have to work with. As of November 1, we had 72 active pledgers. Last year, 122. 197 pledge letters were mailed this week. We’ll be counting the returns, and keep you posted.
Tell us what you can offer Peace! Re-evaluate, confirm, offer what you can, every dollar counts, THEN LET US KNOW! Fill out your pledge form, and return it by mail or email.
Goals: 175 responses by Hanukkah. $40,000 increase in pledge income by Christmas. New Years Day, a clear promise for a thriving Church.

Join Zoom Meeting

We hope you’ll join us on Zoom for this fun Peace UCC tradition of craft and community with a new COVID-time twist. Elizabeth Schilling will be leading us in making Advent Wreaths. Here's what you’ll need:

  • Wire cutters or sharp kitchen scissors
  • Garden clippers
  • Greens - Get outside for a walk to scavenge evergreens!
  • A spool of thin wire
  • Decorations of your choice
  • Five candles (any size):
  • three purple, one pink, and one white, or
  • three purple, one blue, and one white, or
  • four purple and one white
  • Five candle holders, or an Advent base if you have one. (If you don’t have a base or yours is too small to attach greens, you can use sturdy greens and wire them to each other. Then place your candles among your wreath.)

If you're not able to join us 11/27 at 2 p.m., this event will also be recorded and posted to Facebook.com/PUCCSantaCruz. Please contact Elizabeth Schilling, 831-239-6012, if you have questions.

*If you don't have your own supplies, a limited number of wreath bases, also wire, ribbons and juniper boughs will be available for you to pick up from the church, office-entrance deck, Wednesday, November 25, Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 10am-6pm.
Christmas Project
The Holidays, Covid, and Migrant Families

For over 35 years, we have supported migrant families in Pajaro Valley by buying and delivering Christmas gifts. The holiday season comes at a time when there are few agricultural jobs which means little resources for presents. Because of Covid, this year we are not doing wrapped gifts. Instead we are providing gift cards for the families. Our church is raising funds for 16 families at Murphy’s Migrant Labor Camp, outside of Watsonville. Our goal is to raise $900 by December 16. So far we already have a commitment for $300, so we are well on our way. If you would like to contribute, please write a check to PUCC and note that it is for the Christmas Project on the memo line. Mail your check to the church office. We need the funds by Wednesday, December 16 so we can purchase the gift cards. Hopefully next year we will be able to buy actual gifts and enjoy fellowship with the families when we visit the camps. If you have questions, contact Anna Hackenbracht at koohack@comcast.net. And thanks!
Poetry at Peace

Conversations with the Artist”

My first teacher told me
              that what sculpture involved
was being a God. He was not talking
about the old ways, about fashioning
a man out of a rib.

Help us become a community that vulnerably shares each other’s burdens and the weight of glory. Listen to our hearts’ longings for the healing of our world.

Prayers for the blessed community.

Please join us in prayer for:

  • Gratitude for Peggy Kelly’s successful surgery.
  • Continuing Covid 19 recovery from Ella Blackburn and those in her school.
  • The Santa Cruz Waldorf school’s students and staff testing positive for Covid.
  • The life and family of Anne Roger’s cousin, Nancy June Esteb
  • Less pain for Diane Syrcle’s mother, Janet.
  • Continuing prayers for Mary Male and Linda Appleton
  • Respectful dialogue within the wide political divide.
  • Gratitude for the promise of an effective Covid 19 vaccine.
  • Wisdom by individuals to minimize the spread of Covid 19 during the holiday season.
  • Those who will be celebrating this holiday season without the companionship of a loved one who has died. May they feel the love and comfort of community.
. . . Knowing you are hearing us better than we are speaking, we offer these prayers in all the holy names of God, amen.

As we all are very aware, things have been tough for many during this covid-19 pandemic and holding fund-raisers have been really challenging. I would like to thank all those from Peace United who have given so generously to our efforts to continue the support of education and health/water and sanitation projects in communities in rural El Salvador.
