Discover the Power of Prayer with Pastor Bruce Johnson at Pender UMC

Join us at Pender United Methodist Church this Sunday, September 15th at 10 AM, for an empowering sermon titled "Praying Big" by Pastor Bruce Johnson. Dive deep into the scriptures of Ephesians 1:15-23 and Mark 8:27-38, as we explore the vast dimensions and profound impact of prayer in our lives.

Service Highlights:

Sermon: Pastor Bruce will challenge us to expand our prayer horizons and experience the transformation that comes from truly bold and faith-filled prayers.

Scriptural Insights: Gain deeper understanding of how prayer connects us with the divine power and purpose outlined in Ephesians and the lessons from Jesus' journey as depicted in Mark.

The 17th Sunday after Pentecost: Reflect on the season's spiritual themes and how they relate to our daily walk with Christ.

Whether you're joining us in person or tuning in from home, this sermon promises to enrich your spiritual journey and inspire you to pray with courage and expectancy. See you on Sunday for a day of faith, reflection, and community!

Dear Church Family:

The Gospel of John begins like this:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it…And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-4, 14 NIV)

Some churches read John 1:1-18 every Christmas Day as the scheduled Gospel lesson. But with most churches in this country not worshiping on Christmas Day, many Christians rarely hear John’s wondrous and inspired testimony to the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ, words that are essential for Christians to grasp and understand the whole New Testament portrait of Jesus who is “the Word,” creator, life, light, glorified, grace and truth-filled, and so much more, God with us in the flesh. John’s testimony is a mysterious revelation and a revealed mystery, given for our salvation.

While there is much more to John’s account of the life of Jesus Christ than the prologue of chapter one, the fourth Gospel is unique in helping believers to consider the deeper meaning of Jesus’ person and ministry, and the good news of God’s purposes for our lives and fellowship in Christ.

Beginning next week, all members and friends of Pender are invited to begin a study of John’s Gospel together at the church. There will be two weekly opportunities to participate, on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 and Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the library. The class will consist of reading and discussing John together, with as eye toward how it speaks to us as the church and individual disciples of Jesus in our time. I will serve as facilitator and resource. If you would like to be a part of this opportunity, simply read through the book of John between now and then and join us at one or the other of the weekly sessions. If for some reason you can’t be there next week, come the following week. And please feel free to invite an interested friend or curious neighbor.

John the apostle closes his Gospel with this admission: while Jesus did much more than I could ever record, I write these words that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life in his name (20:31). I look forward to exploring with you the life that is ours in Jesus’ name.

Pastor Bruce

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries ("WFCM") Current Request for Donations

WFCM has been providing food and services to the community for 37 years! Pender was one of the twelve founding churches that set the path and began the journey.  Becky Bryan is our current liaison with WFCM.  Please contact her with any questions.

In May more than 700 families were provided groceries from the Food Pantries, a 15% increase over May of 2023. Serving more families means we have a greater opportunity to make an impact with our donations.

There are multiple ways you can support this community ministry.  The ways we hear of most often are donations of goods or money. Another way to participate is through volunteering of time to work in the Food Pantry.  If you are interested in volunteering, contact the WFCM office or Becky Bryan.

Financial donations to be used to stock the Food Pantry can be made to Pender to be forwarded to WFCM.  In a recent newsletter, WFCM explained that, because of the savings that flow out of bulk purchases, a donation of $100 is used to purchase the equivalent of $600 of food.

For donations of food and toiletry items, you may leave your gifts in the grocery cart located by Pender’s front doors.  OR, you can order from Amazon for direct delivery to WFCM at 4511 Daly Drive, Suite J, Chantilly, VA 20151.
