July 27, 2025 | The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, please join us at Pender United Methodist Church for a meaningful and inspiring worship service. Pastor Bruce Johnson will preach a sermon titled "Character Matters", drawing from Genesis 13:1–18 and Luke 17:20–33 to explore how integrity, humility, and faithfulness shape our walk with God.
We'll also hear a brief and heartfelt recap from Jane McKee about the recent youth mission trip to Philippi, West Virginia.
As part of the service’s musical offering, Sean Whitmer will perform “Allemande” from JS Bach’s Partita in D Minor on violin, accompanied by Heidi Jacobs on piano—a beautiful moment of classical reflection and worship.
Come worship with us in person or online, and be renewed by God’s Word, music, and community.
🙏 Come as you are, and be inspired to take your next faithful step.

Dear Church Family:
Americans are very good at deciding what we want and pursuing our wants and wishes. Our days are filled with hundreds of messages promising to make our lives better and assuring us that we are "worth it." We don't take much persuasion. We make a virtue out of "following your dreams" or pursing our passions and we teach our children to do the same. Christians are not immune from taking this message to heart.
We are not nearly as good at asking, what is worthy of my life's time and energy and talent? What does my Creator and Savior desire for my life in service to God and my every neighbor? What if my desires and plans are not in line with God's purposes for my life?
It is not hard to see why we shy away from such questions. If I really make God's priorities my own, I may discover that God has a different purpose for my life. I may have to change my plans in order to pursue God's purpose. My prayer for "Thy will be done on earth" may require that I bend my will to the will of God so that His will is done in my life. My life may have to change in ways I never dreamed of.
To be a follower of Jesus is to yield one's will to the will of God, to desire what God wants for my life. Soren Kierkegaard wrote, "Purity of heart is to will one thing." Disciples of Jesus pray for a pure heart that desires and pursues the will of God above all else. As I pursue a heart for God, my supreme desire becomes to learn of God's purpose for me, and to devote myself wholly to the purposes of the One who gave me life and who will one day demand an accounting of how my life was spent.
To be a Christian is to follow God's dream and pursue God's passion, to play my part in Jesus' great disciple-making and world-transforming mission. Of course, there are 1000 ways to serve the Lord faithfully. Like any dream, following God's dream for us requires sight, a clear vision of God's purpose and the way to achieve it. Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." (KJV) Those with a heart made new for God then pray for a clear-eyed vision of God's purpose and a will to follow in His way. What is true of our lives is true also for the church.
In recent weeks, Pender church leaders announced that a Day of Discernment is being planned for later this summer, for Jesus' disciples at Pender to gather and consider God's purposes and priorities for us in this time, and the steps we need to take to pursue those purposes together. The Day of Discernment is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 9:00-3:00 in the Gathering Place. We will read the scriptures and talk together about God's enduring purposes for His people. We will remember and give thanks for Pender's history of serving Christ in the past. And we will prayerfully consider God's present and new work for us in Jesus' great disciple-making mission. Our objective is not merely to share our ideas about what we think we should be doing, but rather to discern the will of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit as we strive to fulfill Jesus' mission in this time, and then to begin planning accordingly. From this process of discernment, we seek to gain a fresh vision of God's purposes and to clarify needed priorities for fulfilling the mission. As concrete next steps, we will seek to name goals that to guide our existing ministries and give us wisdom to add to or amend those ministries as we agree is needed.
The Day of Discernment is not for church leaders only. If you are a part of the Pender family--member or friend--we invite you to join us for this special day of seeking and pursuing together God's holy and loving purposes for our congregation in this time. Between now and then, let us all prepare ourselves by examining our hearts, recommitting ourselves to following Jesus with our whole lives, and praying for a fresh vision of God's purposes for us in a new season of ministry.
Where there is a clear and godly vision, and a pure heart to follow it, Jesus' church will surely thrive.
Pastor Bruce

Does your group meet at Pender—either in person or online?
Help us keep the church calendar accurate! If anything’s changing with your recurring meeting, just shoot an email to webmaster@penderumc.org.
Pender meetings follow the school year, so if your group meets weekly or monthly and wants to continue in the fall, you'll need to reschedule for the 2025–2026 year. You can start booking your recurring dates on Monday, July 28, 2025.
With four other congregations now sharing space at Pender, it’s more important than ever to reserve your room—and release it if you're no longer using it.
Pender members and Pender-sponsored groups (like the Boy Scouts) can click here to add your event. Be sure to include your preferred room number.
Once your event is approved, you’ll get an email confirmation. Just remember: if someone else already booked the room, you'll need to pick another option.
Thanks for helping Pender stay organized!

On July 4, 2025, historic rain levels led to catastrophic flash flooding along the Guadalupe River in Central Texas. As of July 9, at least 110 people have died, including 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp in Hunt, Texas.
In response, UMCOR has awarded a solidarity grant to the Rio Texas Annual Conference to support their relief efforts.
This grant will provide immediate relief to those impacted through Early Response Team deployment, debris removal, distribution of relief supplies and more.
In mid-June, severe flooding impacted Ohio and Marion counties in West Virginia, leading to the deaths of eight people.
In response, UMCOR awarded a solidarity grant to the West Virginia Annual Conference to support its relief efforts.
Continue to pray for those who have lost loved ones and for all who have been impacted by these devastating disasters.

In the past week we have all been following the tragic news that resulted from flash flooding in central Texas, killing over one hundred people with even more unaccounted for.
The deaths included children, counselors, and the director of Camp Mystic, a Christian girl's summer camp. As we keep the families and rescue workers in prayer, we also desire to help in tangible ways.
The United Methodist Church, through the ministry of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is already on the scene bringing needed help. A grant has been awarded to the Rio Texas Conference that will facilitate UM Emergency Response Teams to assist with relief efforts and debris removal.
If you would like to help support UMCOR's efforts to assist in this ongoing process, you may make out your check to Pender UMC and put "flood relief" in the note space.
All monies received will go directly to this effort.

A Message from the Finance Committee
Dear Pender,
Thank you for your generous gifts to Pender and its many ministries.
We have recently analyzed the financial data from January and were concerned that our offerings were about a third less than what we projected based on the annual estimate of giving cards that were turned in late last year.
While we realize that everyone has a different pattern of giving, we greatly appreciate those who are able to give on a regular basis so that we can pay our bills.
We would like to offer a gentle reminder for you to please update your offerings for 2025 if you have not already done so.
Thank you for your support of Pender and God’s work here.
The Finance Committee
As of June 30, 2025:
MTD actual revenue was $40,580; YTD actual revenue was $280,428;
MTD actual expenses was $39,526; YTD actual expenses was $290,471;

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries – WFCM - programs are designed to serve as a critical safety net to keep individuals and families in financial crisis housed and fed while providing resources, support, compassion services, and connections to help them work toward financial stability and food security.
In 1987, Pender UMC along with 11 other local churches saw the need for coordinated aid and formed WFCM. Nearly 40 years later, its primary programs are the Emergency Food Program including two Free Food Markets, 15 satellite site refrigerators, and home delivery and Emergency Housing Financial Services Program (assisting with rent, mortgage, and utility bills) serving an average of 700 families/month, nearly 5,000 individuals/year. WFCM, the anchor community-based organization in Region 4 of Fairfax County, provides food and financial support to families at risk of hunger and homelessness in 9 zip codes in western Fairfax County (Centreville, Chantilly, Clifton, Fairfax, Fairfax Station, Herndon, and Oak Hill).
