Dear Church Family:

As we were engaged in our pre- and post-General Conference conversations about proposed changes in the United Methodist Church regarding, among other things, marriage, and sexual ethics, one of our members said, “What I want to know is, What does the Bible say?” I thought to myself, yes, that is the first question.

What the Bible has to say about our most intimate relationships as human beings is of paramount importance for our lives as Christians in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition. The Book of Discipline of the UMC (2016, par. 105: “Our Theological Task”) affirms, “United Methodists share with other Christians the conviction that Scripture is the primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine” (authorized teaching). Drawing on our Wesleyan and Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) traditions, we affirm also, “The Bible is the source of all that is ‘necessary’ and ‘sufficient’ [for] salvation and is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice.”

While there are many relevant issues that call for our attention in the, sometimes contentious, matters of sex and marriage, the Bible is not silent about God’s purposes and the shape of faithful living for those who follow the risen Lord Jesus and are called to be his witnesses in our time and place.

In a culture where doubt, confusion, disorder, and suffering abound, the Church of Jesus Christ has good news to share with all who seek a Word from God about these personally and socially consequential matters. It is God’s word of love and truth, grace and life, and it begins among the household of God, the “body” of Jesus Christ on earth that is tasked with being “good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

For the next two Sundays in our worship, we will explore together what the Bible says about marriage, sex, and family. Our starting point will continue to be Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (chapters 4-6), where the apostle invites us to consider together a right understanding and faithful practice of our relationships of love and family. This Sunday, our focus will be on how we are to honor God and love others in these sexual bodies (5:1-20). Next Sunday, we will continue by looking at the ‘first institution’ of marriage and the household (5:21-6:9).

The Book of Discipline assures us: “As we open our minds and hearts to the Word of God through the words of human beings inspired by the Holy Spirit, faith is born and nourished, our understanding is deepened, and the possibilities for transforming the world become apparent to us.” (par. 105)

I hope you will join us in person or online these next two Sundays as we consider together God’s good news for marriage, sex, and family. Let us pray to open our hearts and minds to God’s Word, that our faith may be nourished, our understanding deepened, and we may grow in a faithful witness to the transforming grace of Jesus Christ in our needy world.

Planting a Magnolia Tree in Memory of Tom McDonald

Tom was a long-time volunteer at Pender, never hesitating to change a lightbulb high up in the sanctuary.

A magnolia tree was planted in his memory by the choir room door.

The audio is "In the Garden" played on piano by Liz Sellers as the prelude to the Traditional Service on May 8, 2022.

We were thrilled to be offering a showing of DAVID last Friday

From still waters to shadowed valleys, David's ascent to the throne is filled with towering giants, wild animals, and Philistine soldiers. After unprecedented victories lead to devastating failures, this passionate warrior will face the biggest battle of all: the one within himself.

Captured during a live broadcast, this extraordinary film gives you the best seat in the house for every spectacular moment of the show!

Pender's first movie night was a huge success. 13 people, snacks, 2 kinds of popcorn, pretzels candy mixed nuts sodas lemonade and good fellowship.

See you next time!

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries ("WFCM") Current Request for Donations

WFCM has been providing food and services to the community for 37 years! Pender was one of the twelve founding churches that set the path and began the journey.  Becky Bryan is our current liaison with WFCM.  Please contact her with any questions.

In May more than 700 families were provided groceries from the Food Pantries, a 15% increase over May of 2023. Serving more families means we have a greater opportunity to make an impact with our donations.

There are multiple ways you can support this community ministry.  The ways we hear of most often are donations of goods or money. Another way to participate is through volunteering of time to work in the Food Pantry.  If you are interested in volunteering, contact the WFCM office or Becky Bryan.

Financial donations to be used to stock the Food Pantry can be made to Pender to be forwarded to WFCM.  In a recent newsletter, WFCM explained that, because of the savings that flow out of bulk purchases, a donation of $100 is used to purchase the equivalent of $600 of food.

For donations of food and toiletry items, you may leave your gifts in the grocery cart located by Pender’s front doors.  OR, you can order from Amazon for direct delivery to WFCM at 4511 Daly Drive, Suite J, Chantilly, VA 20151.

The WFCM blue cart is between the two front doors of the church.
