Beginning June 3  you are invited to a 4-week study on LGBTQ as we consider scripture, tradition, reason and experience.

Beginning next Wednesday, June 3, we will have a 4-week study on the issues facing the United Methodist Church around LGBTQ inclusion.

From the survey conducted by Just Peace and our team and from the on-going affinity group discussions, the congregation has expressed an interest in such a study. This will be done via zoom. The audio can also be accessed through phone.

We are hoping for a large group so will likely ask everyone to be on mute and raise their questions or make their comments in the chat section. Our presenter will refer to those and include as much as time allows. Use this link.

Topic: Study on UMC and LGBTQ
Time: Jun 3, 2020 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

God Moments
"You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." ( Psalm 16:11 )

Calling all congregants!

Share your God moments with  Joyce Munt , so others might see the light of Christ.

From Debbie McKamey:

Blessed to be a blessing!

Meeting a friend for a "social distance" lunch, (I like to call "carunch" = Car + lunch), I decided to head to Chik-fi-la's drive through to grab lunch where I could also make a "drive-by difference." That's when you bless the person driving behind you in line by paying for their order -- a fun way to anonymously bless others.

What an unexpected joy when I saw and heard the person behind me (who just realized I had paid for his meal) leaning out of his car window and shouting THANK YOU!

He also shouted that I had paid for the meals of people who work for Young Life, a Christian organization that ministers to young people. And what’s more, this division of Young Life - called Capernaum - works with disabled youth. We both said “God Bless You” as we drove away.

What a God moment that brought me great joy but also brought tears to my eyes to know God had used me in this simple act of kindness to bring joy to my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

The thematic plan is found on  and Bishop Lewis has selected the following themes below for 2020. Links are provided below as well to access the Bible readings for each theme.

From the SPPRC Conflict Resolution
ROMANS 12:18 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

If you have a concern, issue or complaint, either with a paid staff member or with a member of the congregation, please follow the procedures outlined below to work toward a constructive resolution:

Step 1: Attempt to resolve the issue on your own by speaking directly with the person(s) involved only.

Step 2: If Step 1 does not yield a satisfactory result, inform the Lay Leader (Ken Ferris) if the complaint involves a member of the congregation, or the Chairperson of the SPPRC (Verne McKamey) if the complaint involves the Pastor or a paid staff member. They will provide assistance to seek resolution. Other members of the 2020 SPPRC are available to assist: Carrie Cahoon, Kelly Lucero, Cory Calmbacher, Stan Koller, Mark Atwood, and Arlet Williams. Contact information is available on the My Pender Page of the Church website.

Step 3: If the issue is still unresolved, the pastor will meet face to face with all parties involved to find a resolution. (If the concern is with the pastor(s), the issue is worked directly with the District Superintendant by the SPPRC Chairperson.

Step 4: If necessary, a concern involving paid staff will then be brought to the SPPRC in writing. The written complaint must include your name, signature, and date. SPPRC will then decide the course of action. While all complaints will be treated fairly, the SPPRC operations are confidential. Privacy will be respected consistent with the need to reconcile any differences. Steps ultimately taken to resolve a complaint may need to be kept confidential and undisclosed, depending on the circumstances.

Step 5: The Lay Leader will determine a course of action for final resolution of issues or concerns not involving paid staff or the pastor(s).
Backpack Blessings
We are collecting food for an end of the school year Backpack Blessings bag to go to the GBE families in June.

Please click the link below to sign up to supply food. Sign up for as many items as you are able to supply, you do not need to supply the entire quantity of each item.

Food is due at Pender by June 1 , and can be dropped off in the collection bins outside the church front door. Staff will bring the donations inside. Or you can contact Ann Hines to arrange a porch pickup!

We are also partnering with WFCM to supply 60 backpacks for next school year to students at GBE and Chantilly High School. We hope to order these backpacks in bulk online, since shopping can be difficult right now, and we anticipate that each backpack will cost approximately $25.

If you would like to contribute to the purchase of the backpacks, please send a check made out to Pender UMW (with memo line: backpacks) to Iris Salcewicz.

Please contact Ann Hines, Jami Flemmons or Cheryl Moxley with questions!
Building Committee News
Hope you are enjoying our live stream services every Sunday -- we may be physically separated but our church family is staying spiritually connected through our continued time of worship and in our hearts and prayers. We miss you all!

Our Building Committee, co-chaired by Cheryl Moxley and Jami Flemmons, are excited to share news regarding the renovation of our building.
A Poem by Saundra Sandrock
"Heart Smiles"

My Savior gives me heart smiles,
Just knowing He walks with me.
His presence through the Virus
Helps to set my worries free.

Blessings are meant as heart smiles
Sprinkled throughout each new day.
Even the smallest have strength
To bring pleasant thoughts my way.

Show me who needs a heart smile,
Then help me to follow through.
I want to be a blessing
In the things I say and do.

I thank You for the heart smiles
Delivered all through my life.
They were plentiful in joy
But still present in the strife.

My vast heart smiles collection
Renews my hope to go on,
Knowing generous blessings
Will come with tomorrow's dawn.

Offerings have shown a decrease in recent weeks meaning we have had to take money from our limited reserve funds.

You are encouraged to stay current on your giving and, if possible, give extra to help compensate for those who are facing financial hardship.
