A Note from Pastor Marg
From Pastor Marg

I can’t believe the 8 months are coming to an end. Next Monday, June 29, Two Men & A Truck will pack up our belongings and move us back to our home in Chester. I’ll be back for worship on July 5, my last Sunday with you. The next day, July 6, Pastor Will and I will share in the celebration of life for Beryl Marin as her family lays her remains to rest. Then I will have completed my time as your pastor. I will continue, at least for a time, to serve as a coach for Pastor Will.

The world is going through a very challenging time. The Church and all of us who are part of the Church, are trying to make sense of it and respond with the grace and love of Christ. Rev. Will White is an experienced, gifted pastor who will lead you into the next chapter of your history. The road getting to that chapter has been bumpy, as is normally the case, but the Lord will get you through. I will be praying for you and look forward to hearing good reports.

Thank you so much for all your graciousness to me. You have shared your hurts and losses as well as your hopes and dreams. My life has been made richer by being here. As I told you on my first Sunday at Pender, God nudged me to come here. Every day I have asked God to not let me miss any of the reasons for my coming. I am certain that I missed many but the ones I got have been such a blessing.

You have a strong and bright future ahead of you. Your faith is strong, your leaders are united, your desire to serve is compelling. God is in this place and there is nothing God can and won’t do through you. May God bless your faithfulness to the Gospel of Christ Jesus.

Called Charge Conference
The Church Council has called for a Charge Conference for the purpose of considering the removal of person(s) from office and the election of person(s) to fill vacancy(ies).   This meeting will be held via zoom on Monday, July 6, 7 pm.  Only members of the Church Council are eligible to vote.
Prayer Requests
" Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Jesus Christ ."  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pender is a church committed to the power of prayer. Our "prayer chain" is a group of church members constantly in prayer for the needs of our congregation. To make your prayer needs known, you may email the prayer chain by clicking here to send an email to our group of prayer warriors.
Prayer Vigil and Walk
Sign up for the Pender Prayer Vigil and Walk!
Sunday, 12 July from 6 am to 8 pm at the church.
Sign up for one-hour (or more if you wish) increments of time where you can choose to either walk outside around the church, covering Pender with prayers of protection, or... walk inside and pray over Pender's offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, Fellowship Hall, and Sanctuary.
Please note that we will not interrupt the normally scheduled 9 am and 11:15 am Sunday services in the Sanctuary with our prayer vigil.
This prayer vigil coincides with Pastor Will's first Sunday service, and offers a safe, appropriate way to fellowship face to face (but six feet apart!) with our much-missed Pender people.
The prayers as we walk will focus on:
-- Blessings to Pastor Marg for her service at Pender as our interim pastor
-- Prayers for Pastor Will on his first Sunday service, and his future church leadership
-- Prayers of protection for Pender and the people who gather within
-- Blessings on our ministries, programs, and projects within the church and the Pender Preschool
-- Blessings on the staff and staff spaces
-- Blessings on our holy places: the Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary
Bring: masks if you're walking inside, sturdy shoes and water if you're walking outside.
Entry into the church will be provided all day for those wishing to walk and pray inside.
Up to ten slots are available for each time slot.

Lay Leader Ken Ferris will be walking and praying outside at 6 am in the cool of the day! Come join him!
Pender "Return to Church" Survey Results
13 June 2020

168 people started the survey
146 people completed the survey

Survey Synopsis : Livestream services are well-attended, and is something that Pender is doing very well. Pender congregants feel that with distinct milestones met indicating reduced risk to COVID-19 exposure, limited “in church” services might be held; however, a high percentage of respondents would still likely opt to remain at home and attend services virtually to assure their safety.  The church is split down the middle on plans for attendance at proposed drive-in worship services.

Analysis : Continue livestream services, delay opening the church for worship (under strict self-imposed milestones), and consider the effort vs. benefit of drive-in worship venues.

Survey Details :

  • Overall, the Pender congregation feels healthy and relatively stress-free in regards to health and personal finances during the COVID-19 virus quarantines.
  • 100% of the respondents said they watch livestream services on Sunday morning, or watch livestream services and participate in Zoom calls.
  • A large percentage of the Pender congregation plans to wait several weeks or longer beyond state and UMC “return to normal” guidance before returning to church - and only with the following signals for return and preventative actions in place:
  • An effective vaccine is widely available
  • The number of COVID-19 cases in Fairfax County have significantly dropped
  • Phase 2 (35% of respondents) or Phase 3 (24% of respondents) reopening guidelines met.
  • Masks mandatory and hand sanitizer stations available
  • Temperature checks
  • Continued social distancing and limited foot traffic in church
  • Limit passing or touching things (Lord’s Supper, offering plates)
  • Should we return to “in church” services, 66% of the respondents said they would attend a worship service at a different time if required (one service, evening service, more services to assure social distancing, etc.)
  • Respondents generally agreed that stricter guidelines should be assured for children’s and student ministries when we resume “in church” services.
  • 64% said that when Pender receives clearance for public gatherings, we should either limit gathering size or simply keep all activities online only, to see what happens.
  • 52% said they would “not likely” or “maybe” attend a drive-in worship service.  48% said they would “probably” or “definitely” attend a drive-in worship service.

Hail and Farewell
Dear Pender Family,

It is hard to believe that we are near the end of Pastor Marg’s tour with Pender. But we are in her eleventh hour. The official transition to Pastor Will White will occur at high noon on June 30. Pastor Marg’s last Sunday with us will be July 5.

What a ride we have had under her spiritual guidance! She has been instrumental in putting Pender on a positive trajectory notwithstanding many trials.

We survived a change in worship schedules, the effects of a global pandemic that may have caused us to shut our doors but not our hearts for worship, and the transformation of our worship practices to take advantage of technology to bridge the “stay-at-home” gap between us.

She re-introduced Stephen Ministries to us as an important care-giving ministry. She was the face of comfort to our families who lost loved ones, like Beryl and Katie, while the congregation waits for the easing of meeting restrictions to celebrate the lives of our saints.

She resurrected the Confirmation class that led to six new members on Pentecost. And the list goes on and on as she has tirelessly pursued her calling on our behalf and in service to Christ Jesus.

It is time for us to say thank you.

You have three opportunities in addition to any personal thank-you’s you may offer:

1 – You can make a love offering designated for her - Use Love Offering Gift in the memo of your check or  online giving   .

2 – You can participate in a drive by parade at Pender church to make a fuss over her after her last Sunday in the pulpit – July 5.

3 – You can provide input for an album we are making for her as a parting gift. The album will consist of pictures and notes from the congregation. We will be incorporating pictures of Pender families as you have seen them at the beginning of our worship services, and we would love to supplement that with any pictures of your family you would like to provide.

Please provide these as 4x6 prints to Kelly Lucero (10666 John Ayres Dr, Fairfax 22032) along with any personal notes on 4x6 paper you would like to have included.

We will be making a similar album to welcome Pastor Will. Keep him in mind for any personal notes to go with your picture(s).

And one more parade – July 12 after the second service.

We have been so blessed, and we are poised for a period of growth and stability. Praise God!

A Poem by Saundra Sandrock
 "July 4, 2020"

July the Fourth traditions
May have a new look this year,
But Virus alterations
Won't steal patriotic cheer.

For we are blessed to reside
In a country that is free.
Having the right to worship
Is a central quality

Our Founding Fathers realized
That on God they could rely.
This country's spiritual roots
We clearly cannot deny.

Happy Birthday U.S.A.,
May God shed His grace on all.
Touch our hearts with unity
And rally us to Your call.
You are encouraged to stay current on your giving and, if possible, give extra to help compensate for those who are facing financial hardship.
