This Week at Pender

July 10, 2025

By following Jesus

and reaching out to others,

we seek God's transformation

of ourselves and our world.

Hello Pender,

July 13, 2025 | The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

How Do You Respond to the Call of God?

Join us as Pastor Bruce Johnson begins a new sermon series exploring the journey of faith taken by Abraham, Sarah, and others whom God called to help restore a broken world.

This week’s message, “How Do You Respond to the Call of God?” draws from Genesis 11:31–12:9 and Matthew 22:22–33, inviting us to consider our own response to God’s call in our lives.

This powerful series will delve into the lives of the patriarchs and matriarchs of our faith—those chosen by God to become a beloved people shaped by grace.

As we explore their stories, especially as seen in Genesis 18:12–25, we will uncover the heart of a God who brings life where there was none, who works through flawed people, and who continues to guide and empower the Church today.

Whether you’re just beginning your faith journey or have been walking with Christ for years, this series offers fresh insight and encouragement to help you discern God’s presence and purpose for your life.

🙏 Come as you are, and be inspired to take your next faithful step.

Prayer Requests

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Jesus Christ. " 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pender is a church committed to the power of prayer. Our "prayer chain" is a group of church members constantly in prayer for the needs of our congregation. To make your prayer needs known, you may email the prayer chain by clicking here to send an email to our group of prayer warriors.

Dear Church Family:

Not long after I arrived to serve as your pastor, I was delighted to hear the expression that Pender is "a church with a heart for mission." In my two years with you, I have seen ample evidence that this is still true about us. We just concluded a wonderful outreach into our community with Vacation Bible School. Events are already being planned by our Pender Go! team to welcome our community back to church after the summer vacation. In another section of this newsletter, you are invited to join your church in efforts to bring relief to the families and communities devastated by flash floods in Texas. In our worship this Sunday, we will bless two groups heading out to different parts of God's harvest mission field. The Philippi Team will leave a week from Saturday to continue our decades-long efforts to help Ruston Seamons and others in their remarkable efforts to bring the transforming love of Christ tangibly to that Appalachian community. This year, our team will be joined by group of young people from KUMC-Koinonia in another expression of the growing partnership in the gospel between our two congregations. We will also offer prayers of blessing for the Berry family that will be travelling to Ethiopia and Uganda where they Maya will engage in medical missions as Greg helps with technology and Johanna teaches science.

The mission of the church is to spread the good news about Jesus Christ in word and deed, to be and to make his disciples in gratitude for his saving love for us and for all people. This mission reaches near and far, and we are privileged to express our grateful love for the Lord Jesus with hearts and efforts to extend his saving mission to the world. The mission remains the same, even while circumstances are ever in flux. The church with a heart for mission is ever praying to discern how and where we are to serve the risen Lord Jesus now.

For months, I with many of you have been prayerfully wrestling with God's purposes and leading for Pender UMC in a new season of our life and mission as a congregation of Jesus' disciples. To help us in this season of discernment, this Sunday I will begin a sermon series on the life of Abraham and Sarah, chosen by the Lord to be instruments in God's plan to save the world through a particular people. God's redeeming work and Abraham's faith in this journey of salvation are foundational for understanding our life in Christ and God's saving mission to the world and all its people. The sermons will cover Genesis 12-25 and run through the rest of the summer. This Sunday we will look at Genesis 12:1-9 and the theme of "The Call of Salvation." I encourage you to read or re-read this section of Genesis in preparation. Even better, go back and read Genesis 1-25 to get the needed background.

The mission of God is as near as our own families and neighbors. We who have been touched by the redeeming and life-changing love of God naturally want to share that love with others. If you have a friend or co-worker who does not have a church home, prayerfully consider how you might reach out to them in love and, at the right time, invite them to come and taste with us the goodness of the Lord and Pender's heart for God's mission in worship and fellowship.

How good it is to be part of God's mission to reclaim and remake the world, begun in Abraham and fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am grateful to share with you a heart and will for God's mission that is transforming the world one person at a time!

Does your group meet at Pender—either in person or online?

Help us keep the church calendar accurate! If anything’s changing with your recurring meeting, just shoot an email to webmaster@penderumc.org.

Pender meetings follow the school year, so if your group meets weekly or monthly and wants to continue in the fall, you'll need to reschedule for the 2025–2026 year. You can start booking your dates on Monday, July 28, 2025.

With four other congregations now sharing space at Pender, it’s more important than ever to reserve your room—and release it if you're no longer using it.

Pender members and Pender-sponsored groups (like the Boy Scouts) can click here to add your event. Be sure to include your preferred room number.

Once your event is approved, you’ll get an email confirmation. Just remember: if someone else already booked the room, you'll need to pick another option.

Thanks for helping Pender stay organized!

On July 4, 2025, historic rain levels led to catastrophic flash flooding along the Guadalupe River in Central Texas. As of July 9, at least 110 people have died, including 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp in Hunt, Texas.

In response, UMCOR has awarded a solidarity grant to the Rio Texas Annual Conference to support their relief efforts.

This grant will provide immediate relief to those impacted through Early Response Team deployment, debris removal, distribution of relief supplies and more.

In mid-June, severe flooding impacted Ohio and Marion counties in West Virginia, leading to the deaths of eight people.

In response, UMCOR awarded a solidarity grant to the West Virginia Annual Conference to support its relief efforts.

Continue to pray for those who have lost loved ones and for all who have been impacted by these devastating disasters.

In the past week we have all been following the tragic news that resulted from flash flooding in central Texas, killing over one hundred people with even more unaccounted for.

The deaths included children, counselors, and the director of Camp Mystic, a Christian girl's summer camp. As we keep the families and rescue workers in prayer, we also desire to help in tangible ways.

The United Methodist Church, through the ministry of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is already on the scene bringing needed help. A grant has been awarded to the Rio Texas Conference that will facilitate UM Emergency Response Teams to assist with relief efforts and debris removal.

If you would like to help support UMCOR's efforts to assist in this ongoing process, you may make out your check to Pender UMC and put "flood relief" in the note space.

All monies received will go directly to this effort.

Book Lovers Group. Sunday, July 13 at 4:00 PM

Do you like to read and talk about books? Do you like to read current bestsellers or classic books - mysteries, thrillers or non-fiction?

The Book Lovers Group meets monthly on the second Sunday at 4:00 PM.

We are meeting by Zoom and normally we meet about 1 1/2 hours. We have a lively discussion about the book since sometimes we all like the book and other times, we can’t agree if we like the book.

The Pender Book Lovers Group is reading "The Women" by Kristin Hannah for the July meeting. The group will meet on Zoom on Sunday, July 13 at 4 PM. The book is available for purchase on Amazon or at the local public library.

Contact Iris Salcewicz for more information or the webmaster for the Zoom link.

Summer Hymn Sing!

In July and August, we’re celebrating the rich tradition of congregational singing during our weekly services.

Singing at Sunrise – Team Members Needed!

Do you love sharing music, scripture, and encouragement? We’re forming a new outreach team to bring joy and worship to residents of a local assisted living facility—and we’d love for you to be part of it!

🎶 What is Singing at Sunrise?

A monthly 30–40 minute gathering (currently considering the 4th Sunday of each month) featuring favorite hymns, scripture readings, and prayer. We'll have a printed packet of beloved songs available—and we’ll even take requests on the spot!

🧡 What We Need:

We’re looking for supportive people of all kinds—singers, readers, instrumentalists, and those who just want to be present and participate. No rehearsals are planned, though we may have brief prep meetings.

🎹 Instrumentalists Welcome!

Jane McKee expects to accompany but is happy to share that role if someone else would like to play. All instrumentalists—piano, guitar, and more—are welcome!

🗣️ No Solo Speakers Required

This isn’t about having one designated leader. Instead, we hope to form a team where everyone can contribute. When this ministry existed in the past, different members took turns offering brief reflections month to month.

🙌 Let’s Create Something Together

Right now, this ministry is still in the planning stage. Jane and Andy are working to form the core team, and your ideas, energy, and presence could help shape the future of this outreach.

Interested?

Let us know if you'd like to be part of this meaningful and joy-filled ministry.

All are welcome!

A Message from the Finance Committee

Dear Pender,

Thank you for your generous gifts to Pender and its many ministries.

We have recently analyzed the financial data from January and were concerned that our offerings were about a third less than what we projected based on the annual estimate of giving cards that were turned in late last year.

While we realize that everyone has a different pattern of giving, we greatly appreciate those who are able to give on a regular basis so that we can pay our bills.

We would like to offer a gentle reminder for you to please update your offerings for 2025 if you have not already done so.

Thank you for your support of Pender and God’s work here.

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries – WFCM - programs are designed to serve as a critical safety net to keep individuals and families in financial crisis housed and fed while providing resources, support, compassion services, and connections to help them work toward financial stability and food security.

In 1987, Pender UMC along with 11 other local churches saw the need for coordinated aid and formed WFCM. Nearly 40 years later, its primary programs are the Emergency Food Program including two Free Food Markets, 15 satellite site refrigerators, and home delivery and Emergency Housing Financial Services Program (assisting with rent, mortgage, and utility bills) serving an average of 700 families/month, nearly 5,000 individuals/year. WFCM, the anchor community-based organization in Region 4 of Fairfax County, provides food and financial support to families at risk of hunger and homelessness in 9 zip codes in western Fairfax County (Centreville, Chantilly, Clifton, Fairfax, Fairfax Station, Herndon, and Oak Hill).
