Sunday is Ascension Day
Ascension Day, a Christian holiday commemorating Jesus' ascent into heaven, is observed by United Methodists, and it is significant for several reasons. It's celebrated on the 40th day after Easter, always a Thursday, and is also known as Holy Thursday. In the United Methodist Church, it's often recognized on Ascension Sunday, the Sunday following the Thursday.
Why Ascension Day is important to United Methodists:
-
Doctrine of the Trinity: Ascension Day affirms the doctrine of the Trinity, emphasizing the divinity of Jesus Christ.
-
Jesus' Role as Intercessor: It signifies the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of his work as an intercessor in heaven.
-
Hope and Assurance: Ascension Day offers hope that Jesus is present with believers, guiding and protecting them.
-
Wesley's Emphasis: John Wesley, a founder of Methodism, included Ascension Day among the holy days observed by early Methodists.
-
Hymns and Hymnody: Ascension Day is often celebrated with hymns, reflecting the importance of hymns in Methodist worship.
-
Transition and Hope: It marks a transition period, where Jesus, now in heaven, continues to guide and support his followers.

Dear Church Family:
It was a joy to be back with you last Sunday after a month away following my recent surgery. As I mentioned during my testimony, my family and I are grateful for my hopeful prognosis and pace of recovery. I am thankful also for the wonderful help that Pender leaders provided for our church family in my absence, in the office, at Bible study, and the gospel messages by our guest preachers.
As the summer season approaches, I am already hearing discussions about where the Lord is leading us and how we will follow faithfully as a congregation of Jesus' disciples. Even as we prepare now for a busy season of ministry and outreach, we will seek also to discern the Lord's purposes for us going forward. In the months to come, you will hear more about these efforts. I encourage you to be praying for the Lord's will to be made known to us, and for our spirits to be attuned to the Spirit of the living God.
This summer's activities will include the Virginia Annual Conference in Roanoke (June 11-14). Pender will again be blessed to have several of our members representing us at the conference as local church or district delegates. The conference is one of the essential ways in which we are reminded of our United Methodist connection in mission and ministry.
In preparation for Annual Conference, our worship this Sunday will include a special offering for the mission projects supported by United Methodist disciples and churches throughout the commonwealth. Half of this year's offering will support UMCOR (United Methodist Committee of Relief) in its work of disaster response following the hurricane flooding in Western North Carolina and wildfires in Los Angeles. The other half will go toward ongoing mission projects supported by the Virginia Conference in Brazil, Mozambique, Cambodia, Haiti, and in Native American ministries. The Annual Conference Offering for Missions is a vital expression of our worldwide connection as United Methodists in mission.
If you are unable to worship in person this Sunday, you may also contribute on our website, through the gift link and toward "Virginia Conference Mission Offering."
As I get settled again into a regular routine, I am gratified at the many encouraging signs of the Lord's continuing and new work at Pender. And I am delighted to begin another year of ministry with you in the service of Jesus Christ and his disciple-making mission here and around the world.
Pastor Bruce

Does your group meet at Pender—either in person or online?
Help us keep the church calendar accurate! If anything’s changing with your recurring meeting, just shoot an email to webmaster@penderumc.org.
Pender meetings follow the school year, so if your group meets weekly or monthly and wants to continue after June 30, 2025, you'll need to reschedule for the 2025–2026 year. You can start booking your dates on Monday, July 28, 2025.
With four other congregations now sharing space at Pender, it’s more important than ever to reserve your room—and release it if you're no longer using it.
Pender members and Pender-sponsored groups (like the Boy Scouts) can click here to add your event. Be sure to include your preferred room number.
Once your event is approved, you’ll get an email confirmation. Just remember: if someone else already booked the room, you'll need to pick another option.
Thanks for helping Pender stay organized!

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Pender’s Impact Youth took the first meaningful steps in creating a vegetable garden to support The Lamb Center—a daytime drop-in shelter serving individuals experiencing homelessness in Fairfax, Virginia.
This slideshow captures special moments from that day as our youth worked together in service, compassion, and community.
🌱 The Garden Project is part of an ongoing mission to provide fresh vegetables to The Lamb Center, helping to nourish both body and spirit for our neighbors in need.
🎶 The background music, “In the Garden,” was performed by Heidi Jacobs as a prelude to Pender's Traditional Worship Service on August 15, 2024.
We are proud of our youth and their heart for service. May their hands continue to plant seeds of hope.

Singing at Sunrise – Team Members Needed!
Do you love sharing music, scripture, and encouragement? We’re forming a new outreach team to bring joy and worship to residents of a local assisted living facility—and we’d love for you to be part of it!
🎶 What is Singing at Sunrise?
A monthly 30–40 minute gathering (currently considering the 4th Sunday of each month) featuring favorite hymns, scripture readings, and prayer. We'll have a printed packet of beloved songs available—and we’ll even take requests on the spot!
🧡 What We Need:
We’re looking for supportive people of all kinds—singers, readers, instrumentalists, and those who just want to be present and participate. No rehearsals are planned, though we may have brief prep meetings.
🎹 Instrumentalists Welcome!
Jane McKee expects to accompany but is happy to share that role if someone else would like to play. All instrumentalists—piano, guitar, and more—are welcome!
🗣️ No Solo Speakers Required
This isn’t about having one designated leader. Instead, we hope to form a team where everyone can contribute. When this ministry existed in the past, different members took turns offering brief reflections month to month.
🙌 Let’s Create Something Together
Right now, this ministry is still in the planning stage. Jane and Andy are working to form the core team, and your ideas, energy, and presence could help shape the future of this outreach.
Interested?
Let us know if you'd like to be part of this meaningful and joy-filled ministry.
All are welcome!

Sunday, May 18, 2025, was a spiritually enriching day at Pender United Methodist Church, marked by heartfelt worship and meaningful reflection.
We were blessed to welcome Arlet Williams as our guest speaker, who shared a powerful message of faith and calling.
The service concluded with the beloved hymn “Here I Am, Lord,” sung by the Sanctuary Choir and congregation and beautifully accompanied by Heidi Jacobs on piano.
This closing moment served as a powerful response to the day’s message—a declaration of our willingness to answer God’s call.

The Story Behind the Hymn
When The United Methodist Hymnal was published in 1989, one of the most popular hymns was immediately “Here I Am, Lord” (1981) by Daniel Schutte (b. 1947).
The stirring refrain is perhaps the first part of the hymn to capture the singer’s imagination. In my experience teaching congregational song throughout the United States, I have found that many Protestants are unaware that this hymn represents Roman Catholic renewal music resulting from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
Mr. Schutte is a native of Wisconsin. He received his education at St. Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in 1973, a master of divinity degree in 1979 at the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, Calif., and a master’s degree in 1980 at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
Following graduation, Mr. Schutte joined the Jesuits and served as the director of liturgy at Marquette University (1982-1986). He entered parish ministry in Milwaukee serving as director of music at Immaculate Heart of Mary and then Our Lady of Lourdes parishes.
Mr. Schutte has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Scranton. He is currently director of music at the University of San Francisco, a Jesuit institution, and tours extensively as a Christian concert artist. Of his many hymns, “Here I Am, Lord” is the most commonly sung.
A salient feature of Catholic renewal hymnody since the Second Vatican Council is a stirring and memorable refrain. “Here I Am, Lord” recalls immediately Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’”
An unusual attribute of this hymn is the change in point of view that the singer makes between the stanzas and the refrain. The stanzas speak from the perspective of God in the first person singular, while the refrain, though remaining in first person, is from the perspective of the singers of the hymn offering their lives to God.
Each stanza reflects a paradox. The powerful God, creator of “sea and sky,” “snow and rain” and “wind and flame” is also the God who hears the “people cry,” bears the “people’s pain” and “tend[s] the poor and lame.”
This is a hymn of transformation. God transforms the darkness into light in stanza one, melts “hearts of stone” with love in stanza two and nourishes the “poor and lame” with the “finest bread”—a clear Eucharistic reference.
Each stanza ends with the question, “Whom shall I send?” Rhetorical questions are very common poetical devices in Christian hymnody, but this is not one of them. The refrain immediately offers the response, “Here I am, Lord.”
In the Roman Catholic context, congregational hymns were interjected into the liturgy at several points following Vatican II: the opening processional, the offering, during the Eucharist and after communion.
Drawing upon the appropriate Lectionary reading of the day, this hymn might be sung at the offering, or perhaps during the Eucharist (noting the reference to bread in the final stanza), but most likely at the conclusion of the Mass following the Eucharist.
Given the dual points of view between the stanzas and the refrain, it is also possible that a cantor or choir may sing the stanzas, with the people responding on the refrain. The popular style is easily accessible to the assembly.
We are all grateful for this gift from a Roman Catholic composer to the church universal, a gift that has become one of the hymns most often sung by our generation.

Wheel of Fortune
The Lamb Center parking lot is not a CUE bus stop. However, it became one earlier this month for an act of kindness. On May 5th, the CUE bus, a free Fairfax City bus our guests often ride to get to TLC, rolled into the TLC parking lot. The bus driver had noticed the broken wheel on a push cart belonging to Ms. Walter*, a cherished passenger and regular TLC guest, and took it upon himself to purchase and deliver a new cart. His thoughtful gesture didn't go unnoticed, but, oddly, Ms. Walter wasn’t at The Lamb Center that day.
Soon after, Fairfax County's PATH (Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness) team, who provide services to individuals with serious behavioral health disorders who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, came to TLC as they often do. They realized Ms. Walter was missing from her usual spot and were concerned. So they took a drive through the community looking for her, and found her stranded due to her broken cart. With hearts full of compassion, they returned to TLC, retrieved the new cart delivered by the CUE bus driver, and brought it to her. Thanks to the kindness of the CUE bus driver and PATH team, Ms. Walter is back in action.
God reveals Himself in so many beautiful ways, always moving with us - never stranding his lost sheep.

Faith in Action: Simple Steps to Save Electricity and Care for God’s Creation
As followers of Christ, we are called to be good stewards of God’s creation. One powerful way to live out that calling is by making conscious choices that reduce our environmental impact—starting with how we use electricity.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, electricity production is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. In fact, about <b67% of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. These emissions contribute directly to climate change and environmental degradation.
Thankfully, there are practical steps we can take to reduce our personal and collective impact. The United Methodist Board of Church and Society encourages us to consider the following actions:
Choose Energy-Efficient Lighting
One of the simplest ways to save electricity is by switching to CFL (compact fluorescent light) or LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs. These bulbs use a fraction of the electricity of traditional incandescent ones and last much longer. Every small change adds up—and this is a great place to start!
Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances
When it’s time to replace your refrigerator, washing machine, or other home appliances, consider investing in Energy Star-certified models. They’re designed to use less electricity and water, saving both energy and money over time.
Let the Light In
Sometimes all it takes to save energy is opening the curtains. Letting natural light into your home or workspace can reduce the need to use electric lighting during daylight hours. It’s a simple habit that promotes both energy conservation and a more cheerful atmosphere.
Reduce Air Conditioner Use
Air conditioning is another major energy consumer. Consider adjusting your thermostat, using fans, and ventilating with outdoor air when possible. Small steps like these reduce strain on the power grid and limit your environmental footprint.
Invest in Renewable Energy
If you’re in a position to do so, explore solar panels, wind power, or green energy options from your utility provider. Renewable energy helps reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and supports a more sustainable future.
Rethink Transportation
The vehicles we drive are another major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Carpooling, using public transportation, biking, or driving low-emission or electric vehicles can significantly cut down on our carbon output. Plus, sharing a ride often builds community and connection!
Eat Local, Think Global
Our food choices matter too. Eating locally grown produce and goods reduces the need for long-distance shipping, which burns large quantities of fuel. Supporting local farmers is also a great way to care for your community and promote sustainable agriculture.
Living the Call to Stewardship
As people of faith, we are uniquely positioned to lead by example. Small, mindful changes to how we live can have a profound impact—on the planet and on future generations. By embracing practices that conserve energy and reduce emissions, we honor the God who created this beautiful world and commanded us to care for it.
Let’s be a church—and a people—that lives out our faith in every action, including how we power our homes, travel, and care for the earth.
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” — Psalm 24:1
Ready to take the next step? Start with just one small change today. Your light—quite literally—can help brighten the world.

A Message from the Finance Committee
Dear Pender,
Thank you for your generous gifts to Pender and its many ministries.
We have recently analyzed the financial data from January and were concerned that our offerings were about a third less than what we projected based on the annual estimate of giving cards that were turned in late last year.
While we realize that everyone has a different pattern of giving, we greatly appreciate those who are able to give on a regular basis so that we can pay our bills.
We would like to offer a gentle reminder for you to please update your offerings for 2025 if you have not already done so.
Thank you for your support of Pender and God’s work here.
The Finance Committee
As of April 30, 2025:
