This Week at Saint Andrew's

Welcome to our newsletter.

We hope this information keeps you connected to our church family.

Upcoming Services

Thursday, April 10, 2025, 6:00 p.m.

Evening Prayer

  • Join us for Evening Prayer. The service will be available through Facebook Live at the St. Andrew's Facebook page at 6:00 p.m. Daily Evening Prayer, Rite Two, may be accessed here. The readings for this evening may be accessed here.

Sunday, April 13, 2025, 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.: Palm Sunday

  • Join us for Holy Eucharist. The service will be available at 10:00 a.m. through Facebook Live at the St. Andrew's Facebook page and Now streaming on YouTube. To get to the YouTube livestream, click here. Once there, you’ll want to click on subscribe, so that you’re always set to go. You can also get there by going to the St. Andrew's website by clicking here and clicking on the YouTube icon at the top right hand side of the page (the red rectangle with a white arrow inside). The service bulletin may be accessed here or by clicking the image of the cover.
  • Sunday School for children ages 4-12 meets during the 10:00 a.m. service. Infant and toddler care are also provided.

Climate Connections: As a way to reduce paper consumption, please consider downloading the bulletin and reading it on your device during the service.

We will be printing fewer bulletins in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint. We realize that using a device to read the bulletin may be a daunting task, but we have several congregants who are ready to help if you need it. If we are able to purchase less paper over time, we will donate the savings to our outreach efforts. If you don’t have a device to use, but are willing to share a bulletin with your neighbor, that helps us reach our goal too.

Sunday School Information

Sunday School News

Day care for infants and children 3 yrs old and younger during the 10 a.m. service will be provided by Samira Sameni, a preschool teacher at our Saint Andrew’s Children’s Center. Sunday School for children 4 yrs and up will be taught by Tammy Smecker-Hane during the 10 a.m. service. Both will happen together in the Kangaroo Room of the Children’s Center, whose entrance is located in the far left-hand corner of the courtyard (just follow the sign).

This Sunday the children will be parading around church with noisemakers in celebration of Palm Sunday, so we’ll gather in front of church before the service begins. During Sunday School we’ll learn about Jesus’ final return to Jerusalem and the events of Holy Week. Be sure to check out the growing collection of our children’s artwork that depict stories from Jesus’ life on the bulletin board in Fellowship Court, and compliment your child on their work. If you have any questions or feedback about Sunday School, please contact our Sunday School teacher, Tammy Smecker-Hane.

Holy Week Services

Palm Sunday - Sunday, April 13, 8:00 a.m. & 10:00 a.m.

Join us as we reenact the triumphal entry of Jesus and the Lord's Passion.

Maundy Thursday - Thursday, April 17, 6:00 p.m.

The three great days, or Triduum, begin tonight with an intimate service recalling Jesus’ last supper, including the washing of feet and the stripping of the altar. A prayer vigil follows in the chapel throughout the night until 9am on Good Friday. Please sign up in the Narthex beginning March 10th for the vigil.

Good Friday – April 18, 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The most solemn day of our church year, we gather to commemorate the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Priests are available, by appointment, on Good Friday, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. to hear confession in the Chapel.

The Great Vigil of Easter – April 19, 7:00 p.m.

In this most ancient liturgy of the Church, we begin outside in darkness to light the new fire of Easter, processing with the light of Christ into the church for a celebration of our salvation, Holy Baptism, and Jesus’ victory over death and the grave.

Easter Sunday – April 20, 8:00 a.m. & 10:00 a.m.

Festival Eucharist with choir, organ, a triumphant celebration.

Easter egg hunt follows the 10:00 a.m. service.

Altar Flowers

Traditionally, there are no flowers at the altar during Lent and Holy Week. Any dedications received at this time will be printed in the Easter bulletins. To make a donation for Easter flowers, please fill out a flower donation envelope in the pews and place it in the offering plate. The Altar Guild thanks you for your donation. We will continue to accept Easter flower donations throughout the Easter Season.

Easter Flowers For Wooden Cross

Please bring fresh flowers on Easter Sunday for the cross outside of church, as we transform it from a wooden cross of hopelessness to a beautiful cross of HOPE.

Free Concert - April 13

Echoes of Love and Nature is a choral program that reflects my personal journey through diverse musical traditions, exploring human connection and the natural world. The program begins with Venga nel Nostro Coro, a classical invitation to join the choir, symbolizing the prestige and beauty of traditional Western choral music. This transitions into Tarekita, a vibrant celebration that challenges traditional western classical norms, representing my growing excitement for non-Western music and its deeper, soulful connections. Deep River conveys a longing for a peaceful spiritual home, while Rosas Pandan, the first Filipino piece I encountered, connects me to my cultural roots. Furusato expresses a heartfelt love for one’s homeland, and Cikala Le Pong Pong, though playful on the surface, reflects the importance of challenging attitudes and standing up for one’s beliefs. The program concludes with Phind’ukhulume, a powerful prayer for peace and unity in a diverse world — a fitting reminder of the beauty found in cultural harmony.

-Bryce Rivera, Director of Variety Voices

Beyond Here and Now is a journey through human emotions: love, loss, and the search for home. We begin with Moira Smiley’s Wayfaring Stranger, portraying an endless road toward home, followed by Vittoria Aleotti’s O Quante Volte, which captures the bittersweet surrender to love’s irresistible pull. Matthew Lyon Hazzard’s Traveler’s Hymn reflects on love and loss with a rain-like accompaniment that mirrors life’s changing seasons, while I Will Wind Thee in My Arms from A Midsummer Night’s Dream explores enchanted, unfulfilled love, symbolized by ivy entwined around a tree. Eric Whitacre’s Home, from The Sacred Veil, reminds us that home can be a place, or a person. We close with Shawn Kirchner’s uplifting I’ll Be on My Way, celebrating the marks we leave on the world and the journeys still ahead. The choir and I hope this emotional program resonates with your own experiences of life, love, and loss.

-Jakob Swetland, Artistic Director of The Cantate Community Choir of University Hills

Celebration of Life for Ted Morse - April 26

A Celebration of Life for Ted Morse will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Ted’s name.

Save the Date for Spice It Up! June 7

This year's fundraising gala will take place on Saturday, June 7. Building on last fall's success, we will have a taco truck and silent auction. We still need a volunteer to be in charge of non-alcoholic drinks, so if you would like to take this on, please contact JoJo Caprini. More details to follow as we get closer to the event.

Creation Care

As a follow up to our Creation Care Exhibition in March, we’ve posted a summary on our website.

Pray for Peace in the Holy Land

The Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor asks us to pray for peace and keep in our hearts the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and its archbishop, the Rt. Rev. Hosam Naoum. Bishop Taylor has written to him on our diocese’s behalf and invites us to make a gift to the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, which supports the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City. Archbishop Naoum calls on all to unite in prayer for reconciliation.
