 This Week
at
Saint Mark's Episcopal Church |

Food for Thought In this Sunday's reading from 2 Kings, Naaman suffers from leprosy. He goes to the prophet Elisha to be healed and is told to wash seven times in the Jordan River. Naaman is angered because this is, quite frankly, to easy a task - he had expected that for such a great warrior as himself that Elisha would at least "come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy!" Naaman's servants convince him to follow the simple instructions and he is indeed made clean. How often do we need God to remind us to be open to messages of hope and healing even when they come in unexpected ways from unexpected sources? God of compassion, open us to hear messages from near and far, from the familiar and the unfamiliar, as we seek the healing and wholeness you promise. Amen.

St. Mark's SesquicentennialAdditional Town Hall Meeting on July 14th!We are now just six months away from the kickoff of our sesquicentennial anniversary. The Anniversary Steering Committee has been hard-at-work- to plan what is shaping up to be an historic and exciting milestone celebration in 2014. After two successful town hall meetings, the Committee has decided to add one more: Sunday morning, July 14 at 9 a.m. in Bethlehem Chapel. Committee planners at the meeting will make a presentation to church members on the anniversary calendar of events and activities, which kicks off Dec. 1st with a breakfast. We will also discuss our budget and possible anniversary gifts to the parish to memorialize this milestone in our history. Don't miss the opportunity to provide input and to ask questions of the committee. Further, the Town Hall Meeting is an opportunity to be a part of the organizing and continued planning by becoming a volunteer and serving on one of several standing subcommittees that have been established for the celebration. The meeting should last no more than an hour. Come see and hear what's in store including a variety of activities and events which are intended to honor the church's long illustrious history and spiritual leadership in the Evanston community since the post Civil War era. We look forward to having everyone join us to make this anniversary a celebration for the entire church family and community, as well as former members who may still reside on the Northshore. Remember and Save the Date * Sunday, July 14 2013 9:00 am, Bethlehem Chapel

Formation in the Summer Months While our Sunday school teachers and assistants take a break during the summer, worship continues to be the place where our most important formation as Christians takes place. In worship we learn what it means to pray together, we hear stories from the Old and New Testament which shape who we are as God's people, and, perhaps unlike any other place in our culture, we stand side by side with persons we may or may not know, across race, across generation, across ethnicity and join together to worship the One God who created us all. We encourage you to keep regular Sunday worship attendance priority in these warmer months. Each week, an activity bulletin related to the scripture readings for the day will be available for our youngest members from an usher at the lakefront.

Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

Each Sunday we pray, "Bring newness and change to our streets, O God, that we might commit ourselves to our young people and address the epidemic of gun violence which plagues our communities, our country, and the world. Awake, O Streets, rise from death!" Following are a list of ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

Donations are welcome and may be placed in the can found on the cart. We are on the 'honor system' at this point. Simply select your books and put your contribution in the designated box. Thank you to everyone who donated books, helped set up the sale, and worked to ensure that all ran smoothly. Mentoring / Tutoring
An exploratory Ministry Team is forming at St. Mark's to consider mentoring / tutoring with the young men and young women who are participants in the Evanston Jr. Wildkits Football and Cheerleading programs directed by parishioner, Seth Himrod. The Academics Program is an integral part of the program as the young athletes are issued an Academic Progress Sheet which assess whether homework, classwork, and testing have been completed. These reports influence the time they are allowed to participate in their sport that week. For more information, contact seth.himrod@jrwildkits.com or 847-372-2754.

Curt's Caf to Receive $1000St. Mark's Social Justice and Outreach Ministry Team is donating $1000 from the Paddock/Waite Fund for Ministry to Curt's Caf to support its stipend budget. This budget is used to pay students for the hours they work in the Caf. Why Curt's Caf? Curt's Caf is a nonprofit organization that provides training in food service and life skills for at-risk youth in Evanston. Their student-trainees are age 15 through 22, from Evanston, and have already had contact with the judicial system or had been headed in that direction. Student-trainees learn valuable, employable skills (computer literacy, job readiness, food history, and more) and receive job placement assistance when they've completed their training. Our patronage is what Curt's Caf calls "dining with a purpose." For more information, you can visit their website at http://www.curtscafe.org.Everyone in the St. Mark's community is encouraged to enjoy coffee, sandwiches and more at Curt's Caf, 2922 Central Street, Evanston. It's also a great place to hold a meeting - a separate room is available and can be reserved.

God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving finds all of its meaning in relationship. The following are opportunities to be in relationship with one another and with the community of Evanston.

Happy Birthday Evanston! Saturday, July 27 from 1 - 4 p.m. Our city celebrates its 150th birthday in 2013. After being around for over a century a big birthday bash is hardly extravagant. So in honor of this momentous occasion, the Evanston Art Center will throw a lawn party for the city on Saturday, July 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. - and, no party would be complete without cupcakes and juice! The centerpiece of the party will be 150 4-foot candles out on the front lawn, each one representing a different Evanston organization or individual. Weather-permitting, the candles will glow the evening of Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27. Thank you to Trish Barr, Anne Heinz, and Mickey Loewenstein for purchasing a candle for St. Mark's! Evanston Art Center's teaching artists and staff will host members of our congregation on specially designated dates in July to decorate our candle. The candles are heavy-duty cardboard tubes which will be pre-painted with white latex paint - how we decorate is up to us! If you would like help decorate St. Mark's candle, please contact Pastor Debra, rector@stmarksevanston.org or 847-732-9564.
