Dear Parishioners and Friends,
As we anticipate Bishop Shin's official visitation with us on the fifth Sunday in Lent, I have some encouraging news to share with you.
With covid cases down overall, and with all of the knowledge we now have around living with this virus that will be with us for a very long time, Bishop Dietsche has announced that his ban on the common cup at communion has been lifted. This is good news, indeed, and a solid step forward in the direction of reclaiming a vital part of our corporate worshipping life.
I know that many of you are still practicing strict personal disciplines when it comes to covid. Indeed, we all need to remain vigilant and not forget the lessons learned. So please know that though the cup will be available, you need not feel pressure to partake of it if you choose not to do so. As we all know by now, communion in one kind is perfectly valid.
The chalice will return at St. Mary's on the Sunday of the Bishop's visitation, and I will administer the wine. It will subsequently be distributed by Eucharistic Ministers, as in the past. Several people have signed up already, and are in the process of being licensed by the Bishop of New York (a requirement).
When receiving the wine, please note that the Bishop requires that you either drink directly from the cup, which will be wiped and turned with each communion, or receive the host dipped in the wine by the Eucharistic Minister. Self-intinction, that is, dipping the host into the wine with your own hand, is not permitted. This practice has never been endorsed by the Church, and has been found to be the least hygienic way to receive communion.
The Episcopal visitation, confirmations, reception, Sunday school, and now the return of the common cup are all sure signs that the power of Christ's Resurrection is among us.
Blessings,
Father Rick

Helping the Children of Ukraine
|
|
St Mary's Outreach Committee is sending financial support to assist in the direct relief of children who are suffering as a result of the war taking place in Ukraine. Our donations from undesignated Outreach Funds and individual donations have been sent to the organization, 'Save the Children.' So far, a sum of $5,400 has been donated.
We realize many people will have made donations individually, but our intention is to continue to donate, playing a small part in supporting the children and their caregivers. Donations of any size can be sent to St Mary's with checks made out to St Mary's Outreach, memo Ukraine, or online similarly. Any amount will be welcome, and as we accumulate funds the donations will be forwarded to 'Save the Children.'
We are honoring, particularly, the families connected to St Mary's, and in this community, who came from Ukraine and its neighboring countries, several of whom have family members still in that area.
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen. BCP 815

Parish Small Groups
They say that everything old is new again. One of the trends emerging in the Episcopal Church is parish-based small groups. These groups offer people a way, outside of Sunday worship, to gather to share interests and grow in their faith.
One such group is the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, a men's group founded in 1883 and once active at St. Mary's. Their mission is to encourage lives of prayer, study, and service among men. A sister organization, Daughters of the King, has a similar mission for women.
We are always looking for new ways to engage with our faith and one another. If one of these groups (or something else) interests you, please speak to Fr. Rick.

HIKE: HOP INTO SPRING
Join Doc Bayne, naturalist, and environmental advocate, for a moderately paced 2-mile hike to look for wood frogs. Wood frogs are fascinating creatures with an anti-freeze-like blood which lets them freeze and thaw with winter’s whims. Their quack-like mating call is one of the first signs of spring. Come and hop to it!
