Dear Parishioners and Friends,
At this week's Wednesday Eucharist in the Chapel, we commemorated the feast of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln. Grosseteste lived in England in the thirteenth century and distinguished himself as a scholar in numerous fields, including law, medicine, languages, sciences, and theology. In 1235, he was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln, an office which he exercised with efficiency and conscientiousness. He was known to travel throughout his diocese regularly to meet with the clergy and laity, as well as to carry out other episcopal duties. At one of his visitations someone remarked, "My Lord, you are doing something new and exceptional." To this the bishop replied, "Every new thing which implants and promotes and perfects the new man, corrupts and destroys the old. Blessed is the new, and in every way welcome to him who comes to recreate the old man in newness."
In reading the words of Bishop Grosseteste this morning, I was immediately impressed with his wisdom and theological accumen. While he may have been a visionary leader in his time, he did not revel in his own brilliance. Rather, in all humility he made it clear that he was doing the continuing work of resurrection as a servant of God and the Church. This also made me think about what his words mean to the Church today. Where is the decaying "old man" lurking in our parishes? Perhaps he lies in unhealthy attachment to old ways or personalities that are no longer relevant or even present. Or perhaps it is in putting our own agendas above the good of the whole. Maybe the "old man" has become an idol in his own right.
The words of Bishop Grosseteste are as true today as they were in the thirteenth century. We must first look to Jesus who is, as the Prayer Book tells us, "the pioneer and perfecter of our faith." We receive him through his word and sacrament, but it doesn't stop there. This isn't magic; we have to do our part to step out and allow our selves to be transformed by God's power working in and through us. Just like our Lord, we must be willing to be participants through our own sufferings to come to the joy of resurrection. As Jesus said, a grain of wheat remains just a grain of wheat unless it dies and goes into the ground. If it dies, new and abundant life will emerge where we saw only death.
"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever." Ephesians 3:20-21

Walk to End Alzheimer's October 20th
|
Join our team "Chris’ Crew" with Captain Sally Sonne. Participate in a 2-mile (not very difficult) Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, October 20, in Rockland County. We hope that you will join the team by walking or donating.
A cure is on the horizon, and, hopefully, will be discovered before we or our children are stricken. Alzheimer’s is truly a sad and devastating condition for the patient and for family and friends. Sally knows that Chris would want to do anything he could to end Alzheimer’s. For her, this walk is to honor him and give hope and help for a cure.
Registration begins at 9am, with a ceremony at 10am and the walk at 10:20am. Location is Palisades Credit Union Park Stadium (Rockland Boulders), Rockland/Pomona, NY.
