Dear Parishioners and Friends,
One of the things that I enjoy about our Wednesday services is the opportunity to be introduced (or re-introduced) to the lives and deeds of the saints. In our Anglican tradition, many of the "lesser feasts," as they are called, recount the memory of saints and worthies of the English church, such as the venerable Bede or Thomas Cranmer, to name only two. However, other feasts take us back to the very beginnings of Christianity, such as today's observance: Timothy and Titus, Companions of St. Paul.
Their feast always takes place after the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, which was yesterday. From various scriptural accounts, we know that they were holy and dedicated followers of the Way of Jesus Christ. We also note that they were considered to be quite youthful.
St. Paul held them in high regard, and they traveled with him on numerous missionary journeys to places such as Jerusalem, Corinth, and Thessalonica. According to tradition, Timothy and Titus became the first bishops of Ephesus and Crete, respectively. On a personal note, the fact that Titus became Bishop of Crete took me back to that beautiful place in my imagination. It is the largest of the Greek islands and takes about six hours to drive across. In light of all the driving and time spent on "fast" ferries on our trip, I have a great deal of respect for these ancient travelers.
As this season of manifestation continues, we celebrate the lives and ministries of Sts. Paul, Timothy, and Titus, three disciples of Jesus who took his message to the ends of the earth.
Almighty God, who called Timothy and Titus to be evangelists and teachers, and made them strong to endure hardship: Strengthen us to stand fast in adversity, and to live godly and righteous lives in this present time, that with sure confidence we may look for our blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Blessings,
Father Rick

Confirmation class will meet on Saturday afternoons at 4:30, immediately preceding our 5:00 wintertime service. Classes begin on February 5, and go through March 26, eight weeks in total. At each class, we will learn about the Church, and what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. We will learn some basics of the faith, such as the Lord's Prayer, the creeds, and the ten commandments. We will also look into our particular way of being a Christian as an Anglican. This will prepare our confirmands to make their own profession of faith to the Bishop and congregation with confidence and understanding.
Even if you are already confirmed, you are welcome to come for a "refresher."
If you (or someone you know) will be 13 years of age by April 3 and wish to be confirmed, please contact us here at St. Mary's info@stmtux.org or (845) 351-5122.
