From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

For a couple weeks now, we have been participating in the diocesan book group by reading How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. We have had some enlightening discussions, via Zoom, of course, and we are looking forward to the “meet the author event” tonight.

One thing that I have noted is that though the book is not written from a Christian perspective, not intended solely for a Christian audience, it has informed my reading of scripture recently. One of the truly beautiful things about the universality and timelessness of holy scriptures is that they stand alone just fine, but also find a way to break into our current context with surprising insight and freshness.

Today one of the daily office readings was the familiar story of the Good Samaritan from Luke’s gospel. We all know the story, but in light of Kendi’s book, I perceived Jesus’ message in a new light. A man is beaten, robbed, and left for dead by the side of the road. Two powerful men (fellow Jews) pass the broken body and look the other way. A third man (a foreigner) sees the man as a fellow human and has compassion and sees to his needs.

“Which of these,” Jesus asks, “was the man’s neighbor?”
“The one who shadowed him mercy,” is the reply.
And Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.”

Fall Festive Cocktails this Saturday
Thank you to everyone who has purchased tickets to Fall Festive Cocktails, which is being held instead of the Progressive Dinner this year for safety reasons. Ticket holders, please remember to join us this Saturday from 6pm to 7:30pm for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres under the nearly full “Blue Moon” at the Tuxedo Club (outdoor heated porch, overlooking Tuxedo Lake).
Sloatsburg Food Pantry Open this Tuesday
The Light of Christ
A sanctuary lamp has been hung in the church directly above the tabernacle, where the Blessed Sacrament is kept in reserve. The perpetual light of the lamp reminds us that Jesus is sacramentally present, and calls us to greater reverence for his Body as well as to prayer in his presence.

The glass vigil candles that fit inside the lamp can be given in memory of a loved one, as a petition for some need, or in thanksgiving for answered prayer. Each light burns for an entire week, and the cost is $20. With your donation, please leave a note describing your prayer's intention as well as the week you would like the light to burn. You may donate online or mail a check to St. Mary's-in-Tuxedo, P.O. Box 637, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.

Last week, the lamp was given by the Harrison Bush & Family in memory of William A. Bush. This week's lamp is given by Dennis Trotter & Peter Bush in memory of Bill Michael.
Fall Book Group Finishes this Tuesday
Remember that our book group will meet on Tuesdays at 5:30pm (October 13, 20, and 27) for a local discussion (via Zoom) of a very important book that people throughout our diocese will be reading this fall. All are welcome to join the discussion. If you are reading the book and haven't yet received the Zoom link, please email
