From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

There are quite a few offerings for Christian formation at our church aside from the Sunday and weekday services. You probably could name a few, but there is one in particular that you may not be aware of.

On some Thursdays throughout the year, a small group of ladies as well as gentlemen gather in Bentley Hall. They bring along a hand craft such as needlework (though that isn't strictly required), a dish to pass, and a desire to discuss and learn a bit about scripture, theology, and history. The group is coordinated by Wendy Favia, who is always kind enough to come down to my office to tear me away from my work and invite me to join the group.

The dishes on hand are always delicious, and vary with the seasons. Topics of conversation also vary widely. Today we discussed everything from the life of Christ, to gardening, and even the proper names for oversized bottles of champagne (which are all named after ancient kings of Israel). Did you know that a "Nebuchadnezzar" holds the equivalent of 20 regular bottles of champagne? I guess he enjoyed a good party. If you are free, please join us for the next luncheon on August 30th at 11:30am.

Blessings,
Father Rick

Christian Education
The Rector has called a meeting of the Christian Education Committee, which will meet this coming Sunday, July 29 at 11:30 in the vestry room. All are welcome to attend. At this meeting, we will discuss goals for our Sunday School in the coming school year. As you may know, we have a new coordinator, Jenn Creamer, who will be with us and is eager to implement a fresh vision for the program.

Also, remember to register children for the upcoming Vacation Bible School at www.stmtux.org/vbs.
Outreach Update
The Town of Tuxedo Summer Camp is six weeks long and is providing lively indoor and outdoor activities for so many local children. The camp is not supported by tax payers’ money but by the fees paid by the families participating. A big ‘thank you’ to the sixteen individuals who made significant donations, and to all who worked or bought at the Yard Sale so St Mary’s could send fifteen children to camp who would otherwise not have been able to attend. They’re all ‘having a ball’ and enjoying the joys of summer!

Episcopal Charities recently awarded St Mary’s a further grant of $20,000 for the renovation of the Helping Hands Hope Center in Spring Valley. This center, when finished, will bring much of the work being done in supporting the homeless, under one roof. Helping Hands is a great example of interfaith cooperation bringing about significant changes in the lives of people in need. St Mary’s is proud to be working as a part of this team.

The scholarships given by St Mary's in June to two deserving Baker High Graduates are being applied to their accounts with the colleges they will be attending in August. Gerard O'Reilly is bound for Binghamton for his nursing course and Diana Segovia starts at RCC. Diana is doing a two year course majoring in criminal justice and another language, and then plans to go on to a four year college. Both are very grateful for our support.
