From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

On Tuesday of this week, Pete and I were privileged to attend the annual Episcopal Charities dinner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It is always a beautiful evening, and we are grateful to our hosts, the Glynns, for inviting us once again. While Episcopal Charities operates under the umbrella of the diocese, it is not an agency of the diocese per se. Its funding comes solely from a diocesan grant, the generous gifts of individuals, and the annual tribute dinner. This year’s dinner raised over $1.1 million dollars, every penny of which goes toward the service of those in need within the bounds of our diocese, without regard to religious affiliation.

St. Mary’s supports two worthy local causes that benefit from Episcopal Charities grants: the Sloatsburg Food Pantry and Helping Hands for the Homeless of Rockland County. Both of these ministries are literal lifelines for thousands of people in our region, and we can be proud of our part in carrying out our work in this little corner of God’s vineyard. A big thank you to everyone involved, especially our head of outreach, Sue Heywood.

At the dinner, my table mate was a man from Philadelphia who is a part of another fantastic organization, Partners for Sacred Places . Partners has worked tirelessly over the last few decades to advocate for and assist historic houses of worship in preserving their buildings which are community anchors and which house invaluable ministries. My new friend is also something of an expert on American art glass, and it was my pleasure to give him a tour of St. Mary’s the day after the dinner. We both learned from one another, and he commented that he believes St. Mary’s to have one of the most varied and consistently superb quality collections he has seen, with all of the major artists represented. Indeed, we have the only native rhododendron themed window he has ever seen!

The picture I hope to paint here is that in attending the Episcopal Charities dinner, not only were people helped with basic human needs, but friendships were born, and new relationships formed between cities, organizations, and people. We need a sense of interconnectedness now more than ever. In recognizing divine beauty in everything from art glass to a child fed, we come one step closer to him who created all in beauty.

Blessings,
Father Rick

Thanksgiving Day at St. John's in Arden
A Thanksgiving service will be celebrated at Saint John’s in Arden at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 28. If you have never been, it is a magical little church, tucked into the woods on Arden Road in Harriman, we hope you will join us.

Directions: From the Tuxedo Park gate, turn left on Route 17 and continue north until you see the sign for Arden. Turn right, cross over the thruway, and stay to the left. Continue up the hill, and stay to the right. Pass through the open gate and continue up the hill to the clearing, where you will find the church.
All are truly welcome at St. Mary's, which is located within the historic gates of Tuxedo Park and serves the entire Tuxedo community. Please tell the gatehouse you're going to St. Mary's, proceed thru the gates and we're on the right (plenty of parking available).
