From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

“Star of the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.” These words are taken from the hymn “Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning,” written in 1811 by English bishop Reginald Heber. It is one of the great Epiphany hymns in our tradition, and very evocatively brings to mind the travels of the three Magi, as well as our own spiritual pilgrimage of faith.

Epiphany is one of the three great festivals of light in the Christian tradition, the others being Christmas and Candlemas. These feasts come at the darkest time of the year (in our hemisphere), and remind us that though the days be short, and the earth dormant and brown, light and life are our gift from God.

Epiphany is also a time of revelation. The greatest revelation, of course, was the gift of salvation to all the people of the earth in the nativity of Jesus Christ. However, in living a life of constant conversion, creation, and repentance, we are also called to be ever-attentive to the voice of God in our lives. At this fraught time in our history, I pray for an epiphany in our collective hearts and minds, that truth will prevail over falsehood, that unity will overcome estrangement, and that God will crown our good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

Blessings,
Father Rick

EpiscoBuild Celebration January 10th
Despite the pandemic, EpiscoBuild will host, via the magic of the internet, the 14th Annual Twelfth Night Celebration for a Habitat House at 3 PM on Sunday, January 10, 2021. Performances by local area Episcopal choristers and musicians of their best music from this holiday season will be presented for your viewing and listening pleasure. Free-will online offering donations will support the EpiscoBuild effort by local Hudson Valley Episcopal parishes to finance the sponsorship of our next Habitat Newburgh home for a needy family, in association with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh. Please make a donation online or send a check to “Habitat for Humanity”, 125 Washington St., Newburgh, NY 12550.
Annual Meeting January 17th
Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 17, at 11:30am, via Zoom (here is the link with login info). At the meeting, we will conduct the yearly business of the parish and elect Vestry members. We will also review progress of our parish over the past year and goals for the future. Please plan on joining us for this important meeting.
Christmas at St. Mary's
Thank you to everyone who helped make Christmas at St. Mary's so special this year! Despite the limitations of the pandemic, we celebrated the birth of Christ with great reverence and beauty. All of the services are available on our Facebook page (you do not need a Facebook account to view them), along with Christmas messages from our Presiding Bishop and Queen Elizabeth. Thank you also to Father Cromey, Rector Emeritus, who celebrated and preached on Sunday, January 3rd, while Father Rick took a few days off in the Adirondacks to celebrate his own birthday.
