Is Stephen Ministry Part of Your Walk?

You've been reading a lot about Stephen Ministry at St. Matthew's lately. You've learned that Stephen Ministers are lay people who, through training, learn skills and develop their spiritual gifts to offer the best one-on-one care to those who are hurting. Some examples of who we walk alongside are those who have lost a job, have lost a loved one, have gone through a divorce, are battling a terminal illness or facing one of the many other life challenges.

No doubt, you've experienced one or more of these difficulties, too. It's tough. It's ugly. It can be heartbreaking. Can you imagine how much talking to a trained, trustworthy, confidential and caring person would have comforted you? How it would have been with this faithful ally to help you face the days when all the family and friends had returned to their daily lives? How it would have been to feel the solace that comes from knowing one of God's representatives was walking with you through the "valley of the shadow of death"? What a difference, right?

Would you like to be that person for someone else? Someone who lightens the burdens of others as you step with them? If so, we'd love to chat. Please contact us:

Priscilla Trescott  (704-778-6145)
Mother Liz (770-979-4210)

Spring Into A Safe and Fun Summer!

WHERE: PARISH HALL AND UNDERCROFT
WHEN: Next Sunday, JUNE 4, 2017
TIME: AFTER THE 10:30 SERVICE

Plan to stay after church and enjoy BBQ and dessert while our youth
participate in role-play with the Snellville Police Department in the
Undercroft (see info in this newsletter)!
Our police department will demonstrate to our youthful drivers
via role play what to do (and NOT to do) during a traffic stop.
While our young drivers are  learning how to have a safe summer,
we will chow down on some BBQ and yummy berry shortcake!

Summer Mana!
Summer Mana is a program designed to help bridge the gap some families face during the summer months, when school is out and children are home from school. It offers additional meals for school aged children in these families which had been covered by school lunches during the year.

The SE Gwinnett Co-op has changed their Summer Manna program this year. Instead of going to the neighborhoods to deliver lunch daily they are allowing the families to come to co-op additional times to pick-up more food to accommodate the needs of the children out of school for the summer.

What does this mean for St. Matthew's?

We would like to provide the following on Wed 7/5 and Fri 7/7:

Six volunteers from St. Matthew's on 7/5 and 7/7 each day from 9:45 - 3:30, adult or high school age, to help with the distribution time. Duties will consist of processing donations, stocking shelves, pulling orders, assisting clients with the exit area and loading items into the  client's car. We will be able to split the day into shifts if you can't be there the entire time.

Two additional volunteers to help pick up the standing order from Aldi on these days. Volunteers should have a pick - up truck or SUV to transport the items back to the Co-op. The pick - up time is at 9am and only takes an hour.

Two volunteers on 7/5 and 7/7 to supervise the Co-op's new program called Fun in the Sun. This will be for the children of the clients to play outside on the front lawn while they wait. The Co-op will have a Bounce House, Games, Bubble Bonanza and a reading circle under the tree. This would be from 10am -2pm and volunteers may bring their own children to this event if they wish.

Watch for more information coming soon to sign up via the Co-op's iVolunteer.
Contact Dottie  Merrifield, Becky Olbon or Cheryl Wheeler with questions.

Partnering with the Snellville Police Department

What to do when you're pulled over
June 4th, after 10:30 service

St. Matthew's has been chosen to partner with the Snellville Police Department for building relationships in our community.

One opportunity for partnership is on June 4th after the 10:30 service.  The Snellville PD is offering a workshop on what to do when you're pulled over.  This is for youth, their parents, their friends, to learn how to reduce anxiety and risk during traffic stops.  Save the date!

MINISTRY NEWS
SOUTHEAST GWINNETT COOPERATIVE MINISTRIES

June Food Drive  - June is the month in which St. Matthew's focuses on collecting additional items for the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministries

In addition to collecting our usual canned chicken and boxes of cereal (all kinds) , the coop is asking for donations of toothpaste and canned pineapple. These two items are always in high demand.

Beginning on Sunday, June 4th, the Outreach Committee will be handing out bags with attached food list after both services, so please fill bag and return to barrel outside of the Parish Hall.  All items will be promptly delivered to the Coop.

Part of St. Matthew's mission is to "care for the unfortunate".

Few are as unfortunate as those forced to flee their homeland because of war, genocide, or famine. They're the ultimate homeless. New American Pathways is an affiliate of Church World Service and Episcopal Migration Ministries. They have helped many other parishes in the diocese in this mission, and they can help us, too.

Learn more at www.newamericanpathways.org. If you want to help a refugee family become Americans, I want to hear from you.  markdigiovanni@comcast.net. Thank you. Mark DiGiovanni

Ministry Opportunity
Fellowship is looking for a few fun and enthusiastic people to join our committee.  No experience needed.! We meet once a month on Wednesdays at 6:30 for an hour. Interested? Call  Nancy Drury- 678-779-3482,  or Oscar De Leon -770-841-5902.  We need you!

Great Job!
St. Matthew's parish is the best when asked to help with a cause. When we requested your old vases that you were not using, we got tons of them. In fact, we received so many that we had to stop accepting them. Now the time has come again that we need more vases. Please bring them and leave them in the old narthex (entryway to the parish hall) in the box labeled Flower Guild Vases. Thanks again for all that you do.   Janis and the Flower Guild.

Housekeeping Note
PARISH FRIDGE AND FREEZER CLEAN OUT
As  we arrive at the end of the school year, we begin preparation for the many       children's camps that will take place over the summer.  In order to fully support these summer programs, we need to clean out the parish refrigerator, so that there will be room for the various groups to store the food they prepare for the children.  On Monday, June 5, we will completely clean out the refrigerator in the kitchen.  This includes all food other than canned sodas, and all condiments that are less than half full, or have less than three months' dating.  All food,   storage dishes, etc., need to be cleared out by Sunday, June 4, otherwise, it will be discarded. Thanks in advance for your help in allowing St. Matt's to better  support these programs.

The Sermon on the Amount

This Week at St. Matthew's

Looking Ahead
Be at peace.

Do not fear the changes of life, rather look to them with full hope as they arise. God, whose very own you are, will deliver you from out of them. He has kept you hitherto, and He will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will bury you in His arms. Do not be afraid of what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

-St. Francis de Sales
