Join St. Wilfrid's as we partner again with Robyne’s Nest to support local high school students as they prepare for a new school year.

Gift cards to Target and Walmart in $25 and $50 are especially welcome and are available to purchase at our SCRIP table on Sunday, or in the office during the week. These donations are two-fold: they help teens in need and also benefit St. Wilfrid’s through our SCRIP program. 

The most needed school supplies generally include writing utensils like pencils and pens, paper, notebooks, folders, and erasers. Other frequently requested items are highlighters, calculators, index cards, and backpacks (especially large enough to hold a laptop). Depending on the grade level and specific class, art supplies like markers, crayons, and glue sticks, as well as organizational tools like binders and subject dividers, may also be essential. 

Here's a more detailed breakdown

Writing & Organization:

• Pencils: #2 pencils are a classic, but mechanical pencils are also popular.
• Pens: Black, blue, and red pens are often needed.
• Erasers: A good eraser is crucial for making corrections.
• Highlighters: Useful for marking important information in textbooks and notes.
• Paper: Loose-leaf paper, notebooks (spiral-bound or composition), and printer paper are staples.
• Folders: Essential for organizing papers and handouts.
• Binders: Helpful for keeping subject-specific materials organized.
• Index cards: Useful for studying and presentations. 

Other Essentials:

• Backpack: For carrying all the supplies including laptops. 
• Calculators: Especially important for math and science classes. 
• Rulers: For drawing straight lines and measuring. 
• Glue sticks: For various art and craft projects. 
• Headphones or earbuds: Helpful for online classes and studying. 
• Markers and crayons: For elementary school art projects and assignments. 
• Scissors: A pair of safety scissors is a must-have for elementary school.
• Pencil sharpener: A good sharpener can help students write more neatly.
• Tissues and hand sanitizer: Important for maintaining hygiene, especially in shared classroom spaces. 

Donations can be dropped off in the church office or placed in the bin in the narthex through July 30th.

At St. Wilfrid’s, our Adult Forums offer a space for thoughtful conversation, theological exploration, and community formation. This summer, we've been diving deep into the roots of our Episcopal identity through a series of "Episcopal 101" sessions. These forums are designed to stand alone—so whether you've attended previous sessions or are dropping in for the first time, you'll be welcomed into the conversation.

Thank you to Gretchen Hughes for hosting our recent Episcopal 101 sessions, where we explored the structure of The Episcopal Church and the history of the Book of Common Prayer. One more session is on the horizon—stay tuned!

We’re also offering two special-topic forums. Fr. Nathan will lead a forum on the Nicene Creed, a document foundational to Christian theology and still recited weekly in our 10:30am service. This forum is being held in recognition of the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, which took place in the year 325. We’ll explore the history of this landmark council, the theological debates it addressed, the creed’s role in shaping Christian doctrine, and what it continues to mean for us today.

Later this season, we’ll turn our attention to the Book of Psalms—ancient songs and prayers that continue to inspire and comfort. Whether you’re curious, questioning, or just looking to learn, we hope you’ll join us for these enriching conversations.

Scammers are getting more sophisticated, and churches are increasingly being used as part of their tactics. Please be cautious of any unexpected messages, especially those asking for money, gift cards, or urgent help.

Remember, all donation requests from St. Wilfrid’s will come through our official channels including the Sunday Times, this weekly Constant Contact email, or inserts in the Sunday bulletin. When asking for gift card donations, we will always ask that you go through our SCRIP program, and will be connected to a specific effort, such as our current back-to-school drive with Robyne’s Nest and our recent wildfire relief efforts. If you receive an email, text, or call and something feels off, don’t respond. Just call the church office directly. It’s always okay to double check.

Our upcoming fundraiser dinner, Church at "The Chapel," is more than just a way to support St. Wilfrid’s—it’s a chance to come together as a community and enjoy a meaningful evening with one another. Tickets are $80, and we know that may not work for everyone right now. Thanks to some behind-the-scenes generosity, a few extra tickets are available, no questions asked.

If you’d like to join us and cost is a concern, just check in with Fr. Nathan, Laurie in the office, or Sharan at the SCRIP table. As always, there is a seat at the table for everyone who wants to be there.

Letter from Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe on crisis in Gaza

[Episcopal News Service] Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe issued the following letter to the church on July 16, as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.  

Yesterday, Archbishop Hosam Naoum of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East gave a powerful address to the Church of England’s annual Synod in York about the situation in Gaza and the Holy Land. He spoke of the horrifying humanitarian conditions that the war in Gaza has created, including the continued bombing of hospitals, a desperate lack of medical supplies, and a food distribution system that he likened to the dystopian novel “The Hunger Games.”

In his address, Archbishop Hosam asked for our help, saying, “Where the church is wounded and constrained, we need the wider body of Christ to help us, to be the church in brutal and damaging times.”

[The Episcopal News] Hello, we’re the Communications and Technology Subcommittee of the Bishop Search Committee. Chair: Ms. Cherrylin “Chet” Longid (Holy Trinity & St. Benedict, Alhambra). Members: the Rev. KC Robertson (St. Matthew’s, Pacific Palisades) and Thomas Diaz (All Saints, Pasadena).

Tell us what your subcommittee does.

Our subcommittee is tasked with managing the technological aspects and communications related to the bishop search process. During the initial stages of the search process, we were deeply involved with information dissemination and facilitating Zoom listening sessions. We created informational videos and flyers that we circulated via social media and other platforms with the goal of communicating to the diocese and the wider community updates and information pertinent to the bishop search. We also work collaboratively with the diocesan Communications Office to enhance coverage and ensure appropriate information is shared and distributed.
