Thankfully, we have many different resources available to help us in our spiritual journey. Because we live in Southern California, we are blessed to have Bloy House, a local Episcopal Theological School at our disposal. Over the past couple of years, Bloy House has been increasingly focusing on equipping all of God’s people a deeper engagement with Scripture and our society. Next month, they are offering an online course that I thought my interest you. Here is how Dr. Mary Tororeiv+ describes her course:

Reading Ruth: The Politics of Identity, Location, and Change

Mondays in February from 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Mary Tororeiy

The book of Ruth is a kind of a Cinderella story. The thing with Cinderella stories is that they have a beautiful ending, something that gives the reader a welcome sigh of relief, a Hollywood ending. But what about the real story? The story before the end? A famine. Migration. Death. Nothingness. A return. Navigating these changes involves negotiating identities, location, and change. No Old Testament book does it better than the story of Ruth. We will examine the story of Ruth whose foreign-ness reshapes the nature of identity in post-exilic Israel. Using the tools of context and authorial intentions, we will carefully read and re-evaluate the narrative by studying its literary function within the Israelite politics of identity and change. Class fee: $25. Register here.

Last year, Mary+ had the opportunity to speak to the clergy of the diocese at Clergy Conference. I wanted to provide you the same opportunity to hear from a fantastic scholar teaching on an interesting Book of the Bible.

Many blessings,

Fr. Nathan Biornstad+

Rector

The Wednesday Morning Eucharist Service at 7:15 a.m. in the chapel is an opportunity to connect with God and others to be spiritually nourished mid-week. A welcoming time of worship, the service begins with a thoughtful exploration of Holy Scripture, Eucharist, and concludes with a meaningful time of prayers of intercession for God's people.
