Rector's Corner

I am delighted that so many of you were able to join us for our Teaching Eucharist and Annual Meeting. I love being a part of a congregation that is willing to try new things, such as a Teaching Eucharist. If you were not able to join us, our Sunday service contained the usual Eucharist, readings, and prayers, but it also included illuminations (commentary) about why we do what we do. Why are the candles lit before service? Why do we exchange the peace, and what does it mean? If you missed this service, or would like to see it again, you may watch it on our church website (here) or on our Facebook page (here).

Then, after the service, we gathered in Sacquety Hall for a potluck and our annual meeting. Our Senior Warden, Nancy Davies, who just completed her last year on the Vestry and her third as Senior Warden, highlighted various ministries and people who are integral to the success of our parish. Nancy also presented an overview, with pictures, of the wonderful and meaningful events and services that were held over the past year, and highlighted our Outreach activities.

Debbi Campana, our Junior Warden and Chair of the Preschool Board, reminded us that the Preschool is our largest Outreach ministry. Debbi informed us of the Preschool’s financial success during the past year, and highlighted many of the events and gatherings which took place in 2025.

Luke Spak, our Treasurer for the past three years, presented the 2026 budget and emphasized our solid financial performance. Because of your amazing generosity, we were able to shrink our 2025 deficit to less than $9,000 (the actual deficit was $8,433). I am so thankful for all of your gifts this past year (time, talent, and treasure). Our investments performed well, and we also were able to raise additional funds for our Pipe Organ Restoration Project during 2025. We also announced a change in the SCRIP program. We are moving to online only, and gift cards can easily be purchased from the RaiseRight app or website (link) with our code (399F46E634598). See links below for our financial reports and the other presentations.

In my presentation, I highlighted whom we, as a parish, are called to serve (the community, occasional attendees, regular attendees, visitors, ministries, the Vestry and clergy). I also discussed how we serve (gathering, embracing, and sending), throughout our liturgical year. Everything we do is supported by our Vestry and our mission statement: "St. Wilfrid's is a Christian community seeking to know and unconditionally share God's unfailing love."

I thanked our Executive Team, (Nancy Davies, Senior Warden, Debbi Campana, Junior Warden, Luke Spak, Treasurer, and Carol Cherpes, Vestry Clerk) and all of the other Vestry members for their amazing hard work and faithfulness this past year. I also thanked Linda Mendelssohn for blessing our parish with three years of fantastic hospitality, and Steven Nadolny for his several years of faithfully and enthusiastically chairing the Stewardship Committee.  I then announced that the new Senior Warden would be Robert Morgan; Leith George is the new Chair of Stewardship; and Stewart Lumb is the new chair of Legacy Circle (which encourages parishioners to consider remembering the parish in their estate planning). I also made an appeal to the parish for a volunteer to lead the Hospitality Committee. If you feel God moving your heart to serve as Hospitality Chair, please reach out to me or our Senior Warden, Robert Morgan (macbethsparks@yahoo.com).

We also celebrated God's answer to our parish prayer, Pray Until Something Happens. Starting in September of last year, we asked for God to bring us five new members to join the congregation. Thankfully, God had already brought us several new folks before September, for which we are also very thankful. It is marvelous to see God bringing so many people to experience God's love, touch, and healing in our community. Our prayers for more than five new members have been answered, and I join you in rejoicing and thanking God for God's goodness and faithfulness.

My presentation also included some encouraging numbers about average Sunday attendance and other service metrics. I feel truly blessed to see God work so mightily in our parish. Once again, all of the slides can be found in the links below in this email.

During the annual meeting, several questions were asked, including these two:

How many baptisms were performed in 2025? We baptized 8 people in 2025 and 7 in 2024.

What is our expense ratio on our investment accounts? Our expense ratio is 1%.

Upcoming Events

Not only do we have many other great events happening in the near future (like Godly Play for Everyone on 2/8, St. Wilfrid's Shares on 2/9, Bunco on 2/11,) but on February 15th we are having a Bake Sale and Ministry Fair! More information for all of these events is below. There is also information about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, which are just a mere three weeks away!

Lenten Book Study

Speaking of Lent, I am delighted to announce our latest Lenten book study. We will be studying

Why Did Jesus Have to Die? The Meaning of the Crucifixion by Adam Hamilton, on Wednesday evenings beginning February 25, at 6:00pm. More details to come, but the books should be arriving next week.

Many Blessings,

Fr. Nathan Biornstad+

Thank you, Nancy and Linda!

Please join us in thanking Nancy Davies and Linda Mendelssohn for their incredible service on Vestry over the past three years.

For three years, Nancy served our parish as our Senior Warden. Through her solid leadership, our parish has repeatedly benefited from her service. For example, responding to the 2024 parish survey for more information about the Vestry, Nancy began summing up Vestry meetings in articles that appeared in the weekly email and the kiosk in the Narthex.  Through her wise council, steadfastness, and vision, Nancy was always quick to offer a helping hand and a cheerful smile.

If you’ve ever enjoyed hot coffee and delicious treats on a Sunday morning, you have Linda to thank. As chair of both the Hospitality and Worship & Special Services Committees, Linda has ensured that every event is thoughtfully prepared — from supporting families with funeral service logistics to creatively keeping our Sunday hospitality hour welcoming and well-stocked.

Welcome!

Join us in welcoming our two new Vestry members, Bruce Groth and Edwin Vazquez.

Click here to read Bruce and Edwin's bios. Additionally included are the bios of Debbi Campana and Lou Podesta as they renewed their partial term.

Giving Statements

Year-end giving statements for 2025 have been sent via email. If you did not receive your statement, or if you have any questions, please contact our Bookkeeper, Martha, at finance@stwilfridschurch.org.

Sunday Morning Coffee

Beginning this Sunday, coffee and hospitality will be offered between services and after the 10:30am service, but not before the 8:30am service. We remain grateful for all who make our hospitality ministry possible, and if you feel called to help support or lead this welcoming work, please be in touch with the church office.

Food Drive Sunday

First Sunday of Every Month

Join St. Wilfrid's with a new outreach opportunity! St. Wilfrid’s is supporting Huntington Beach’s Oak View community with an ongoing food drive on the first Sunday of each month.

The Oak View neighborhood is one of Huntington Beach’s lowest income areas.

Every Friday, CommUNIDAD (a non-profit focusing on helping Oak View) hosts a Food Distribution. Corn, tuna, diced tomatoes, and black beans are always needed. They can also use dry pinto beans and white rice.

For more information, see Robert Morgan or Steven Nadolny.

Funeral Service for

Cathy Johnston

The funeral service for Cathy Johnston, a former long-time St. Wilfrid's parishioner (approx. 1980s to 2017) will take place this Saturday, January 31st at 11am. A reception in Sacquety Hall will follow the service. The Johnston family has invited all to attend.

St. Wilfrid’s Shares

Monday, February 9th at 6pm

in Sacquety Hall

St. Wilfrid’s Shares is an evening of storytelling, reflection and connection. Gather with us in Sacquety Hall as we share experiences, perspectives and wisdom from our community.

Through listening and conversation, we learn from one another, celebrate our diversity, and grow together in understanding and fellowship. Everyone has a voice – bring yours (and a snack if you wish)!

Interested in dinner? Lasagna is planned for those who sign up in advance. Please register at the Scrip table or call the office by Sunday, February 8th. Free Will Offering.

This Lent, we’ll read Why Did Jesus Have to Die? by Adam Hamilton, and explore the meaning of the cross, not as a transaction to be explained, but as a living Word meant to shape how we live. Books will soon be available in the office, or at the Scrip table, for $25. Participants are invited to sign up to bring soup to share one evening.

Parish Photos for Virtual Directory

It’s time to update our parish directory! Photo sessions for the directory will take place on February 22nd, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. It has been about three years since we last gathered photos, and we’re excited to refresh this important resource, which helps us stay connected as a parish community. Many thanks to Lydia and John Canbakal for generously volunteering their time and talents as professional photographers.

Please sign-up at the SCRIP table to schedule a photo time. When you have your photo taken, you’ll be asked to complete a brief form to confirm your most up-to-date contact information. We are also collecting an emergency contact this year, which we have not asked for in the past.

Expecting dozens, Pasadena church sees 800 pack sanctuary for immigration defense training

Read full Pasadena Now story here.

"Organizers at All Saints Episcopal Church set up a meeting room Jan. 26 expecting perhaps 100 people for a workshop on how to respond when federal immigration agents appear in local neighborhoods.

"But within minutes, the room was full. Residents packed the church campus and spilled into the sanctuary. Lines stretched down Union Street and nearly around the block.

"By the time the two-and-a-half-hour training session concluded, nearly 800 people had packed the historic church’s main sanctuary — a space normally reserved for Sunday worship — to learn what to do if they witness a neighbor being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement."

L.A. Solidarity with Minneapolis

Episcopalians active with L.A.'s diocesan Sacred Resistance immigration justice ministry joined interfaith partners in a Jan. 23 rally in downtown Los Angeles also replicated in other cities nationwide in protest of federal ICE activity in Minneapolis and particularly the Jan. 7 fatal shooting of Renee Good. The following day, Alex Pretti also fatally shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
