Treasuring the Gospel: A Christmas message
To the people of God in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles:
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ to you and all whom you love as we prepare for the feast of the Nativity.
In Luke's gospel, we read that the shepherds rushed to where the Christ Child was born and told everyone the good news of peace and love they had heard from the angels. The gospel says the people were amazed. Amazement comes and goes. But Mary looked beneath the headlines. Mary listened with a parent’s inner ear. Mary pondered the shepherds’ words, Luke says, and treasured them in her heart.
So I don’t wonder, as some do, where Luke and Matthew heard about Jesus's birth. A parent doesn't forget. Each birth, each first homecoming, is a new creation. Better than anyone, Mary knew the story of the Prince of Peace, from Christmas to Easter, and she told anyone who would listen for the rest of her life.
Thanks to Mary, we're still telling the Christmas story. It is good to be amazed. But we also ponder the gospel’s words of love, justice, and righteousness. We treasure them in our hearts. And we tell the good news to anyone who will listen. Glory to God, and on earth, peace.
Yours in Christ’s love,
The Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor
VII Bishop of Los Angeles
