St Joseph High School - A Catholic College Preparatory School
Celebrate Catholic Schools Week! Jan 27 - Feb 2!
Catholic Schools Week is a celebration of Catholic education in the United States. This year's theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”

Parents: thank you to everyone who has signed up to help us show our appreciation to faculty and staff during this week. If you'd like to contribute, click the buttons below to see what's still needed. Thank you for helping us make the week a success!
Celebrating Diversity All Week Long!
This year we want to raise our awareness of how international the Catholic church is. We’ve asked the international clubs, the multicultural club, our international students, the World Language Department, and Campus Ministry to weave together the global foundations of our community.

Next week, students and staff will see evidence of these efforts on SJTV, in our classrooms, and in the cafeteria. Our school wide Mass on Wednesday will have an international flair and our own Mr Schmidlin will enlighten us with a lecture on the global issues facing the church today. The week will close with a potluck festival in the cafeteria to celebrate the Chinese New Year and African-American History Month. The Proof is in the People: Faculty & Staff Spotlights!
Carmen Pagliarella '73, Spanish Teacher

Mr Pagliarella holds a Bachelors from Fairfield U. and a Masters from SCSU. He has been teaching at St Joes for 4 years and currently coaches Girl's Tennis.

For 38 years, Mr Pagliarella taught in Stratford, CT as a spanish teacher, retiring in 2015 from Bunnell High School. While there, he served as the Head Coach for several teams, including:

  • Girls Volleyball (5 years); Boys and Girls Soccer (19 years); Bowling (17 years); Boys and Girls basketball (16 years) and Girls and Boys tennis (30+ years).

In 1993, he was chosen as the Connecticut High School Coach of the Year and in 2001, was inducted into Bunnell's Sports Hall of Fame. Mr Pagliarella has been married for 41 years to his college sweetheart, Cheryl, and they have one child, Christopher, who graduated from Yale. Christopher will be getting married this September!

"After retiring after 38 years of teaching, I accepted a Spanish position at my Alma Mater! Needless to say, I feel blessed to be able to teach among such special teachers and students. You can feel the familial atmosphere as you walk through the corridors, classrooms, during masses, at games, and pep rallies. I love that we can express and celebrate our Christian values and morals without repercussions. St Joseph High School is where I belong and I look forward to the daily challenges and adventures that lie ahead."

Recommended: The Price of Duty by Todd Strasser
Wounded in action, and in line for a prestigious Silver Star, Jake Liddell has been sent back home to recover before finishing his tour of duty. Jake comes from a long, proud tradition of military heroes, but nothing prepares him for the true horrors of war. In his brief return home, Jake must navigate his conflicted feelings as he tries to please his grandfather, a retired general, clarify his relationship with his girlfriend, and visit one former comrade and the widow of another. Strasser’s provocative novel is a timely, relevant critique of the American war machine and its dependence on idealistic and vulnerable young people.
