Carla Aldana, English Teacher

Prior to joining St Joseph High School in 2013, Ms Aldana taught at John Commodore Rodgers Elementary-Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland. Within months of graduating from the University of Connecticut, Ms Aldana was able to secure a full-time position as a 6-8 th grade Language Arts teacher through the Baltimore City Teaching Residency. The program allowed her to dive right into her teaching career while pursing graduate level courses.

Prior to teaching at the middle school level, however, Ms Aldana interned at Hartford Public High School and The Urban league of Greater Hartford and felt her calling was working alongside the high school population. She ultimately decided to return to Stamford, Connecticut and enrolled at Sacred Heart University where she went on to earn her Master of Arts in Secondary Education, English.

Ms Aldana fell in love with SJ for the very same reason our student do - academics, faith, family, and service to the community. She has spent the last five years teaching both CP and Honors II English courses including ESL/Composition, World Literature and Composition, American Literature, British Literature, Multicultural Literature and (new this year) Women’s Literature. In the past, Ms Aldana has co-moderated National English Honor Society and Astronomy Club; she presently co-moderates Zumba Club and serves as Producer for Drama Club. She has also chaperoned Habitat for Humanity builds in Bridgeport, as well as service trips to Appalachia and Puerto Rico. She is very blessed to be making the most of what SJ has to offer!

Librarian Recommended: Book of the Week!
Estrella is a feisty 15-year-old living with her parents on a ranch in southern Texas. It’s 1931, and the Great Depression is in full swing. Her town is severely divided ethnically, and families of Mexican descent, though American citizens, are being rounded up and repatriated across the border. Following a protest that Estrella organizes, her home is burned, and she, her toddler brother, and mother are separated from her father while being transported to Mexico. They are thrown onto a train, forced into an open-air livestock corral for days with hundreds of others in harsh winter weather, and then taken to Mexico City, where survival is a constant challenge. Readers will recognize striking similarities between events in this novel and the separation of refugee children from their parents today. Through Estrella’s eloquent letters to her late grandmother and insightful poetry written in her journal, the sorrow and hardship of the ordeal is brought to light in a unique voice.
