Innocent Classroom Program Spends the Day at SJ
On Thursday, September 20, Dr Matthew Brandt, of the Innocent Classroom Program , came to speak with Ms Lowell's Multicultural Literature senior class and The Multicultural Club.

The after-school discussion focused on how school communities can break down barriers across the lines of race, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background, culture, learning styles, and linguistics to bring our own school community closer together. We are grateful Dr Brandt and the Innocent Classroom Project for sharing their expertise with our school community!

Student Spotlight - Karl Kelly '19!
Congratulations to Karl Kelly '19, who became an Eagle Scout on September 22!

Karl is a member of Troop 270 in Newtown. He has been involved in scouting for eleven years - since first grade! Karl's Eagle Scout Service Project was for the Audubon Center at the Bent of the River in Southbury. It was completed in two phases: the refurbishment of the Audubon Society's main parking area and the improvement of the drainage system on one of the main trails that was at one time the New York to Boston Post road.

In addition to scouting, Karl is a member of the SJ Varsity Football and Lacrosse teams as well as the National Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow Boy Scout Honor Society, and a Student Ambassador. In college, Karl would like to major in International Business and Economics. His proudest moment to date is being a part of two state championship teams and making Eagle Scout all in the same year!

Here to Stay by Sara Farizan
After Bijan Majidi, a JV Basketball player, is called up and subbed for a varsity player, he leads the scoring in an upset victory and suddenly becomes popular.

But when he gets involved in a petition to change the school's mascot - largely to spend time near his crush, Elle - he finds he's run afoul of Will Thomas, a post-grad senior whose wealthy family includes major contributors to the school.

An anonymous email portrays Bijan as a terrorist, apparently based on his American-born mother of Iranian descent and a (now deceased) Jordanian father. While parents and friends pull together to bring the culprit to justice, Bijan endures cruel pranks and crushing social isolation. The novel effortlessly tackles several important societal issues, keeping them in the foreground without detracting from the main focus.
