This Week at St Timothy's
Episcopal Church
August 29, 2018
|
|
Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
|
|
Lord Jesus Christ,
who hast built thy Church
upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets:
mercifully grant that building upon thee, the chief
cornerstone, with beauty and substance,
we may raise here at St Timothy's a
faithful people and a holy temple to thy glory.
May we and generations yet to come learn to praise thee
more and more in spirit and in truth.
Amen.

The suggested donation to sponsor the flowers is $60. Is there a date coming up when you would like to honor someone or remember someone with a flower dedication? If so, please contact Ellen Turner at [email protected].

Sacramentals | Fr DJ Griffin
|
|
This past week, we blessed and gave out tags at our Back to School Blessings. These are simple black luggage tags with a St. Timothy’s sticker on them, but they represent much more. In fact, since they have been blessed, they could be considered a kind of sacramental.
Notice I wrote “sacramental,” not “sacrament.” These concepts are related, but they are two different things. Sacraments are effectual signs of God’s grace, meaning that they convey what they signify. In other words, they aren’t just mere symbols or reminders. The Eucharist isn’t just an apt representation of Christ’s Body and Blood; it actually conveys to us Christ’s Body and Blood. The water of baptism isn’t just a symbol of how Jesus washes away our sins; it is the actual means by which he washes away our sins.
Sacramentals, on the other hand, are mere symbols and reminders. Sacramentals include things like holy water, rosaries, and saints’ medals. They are outward and visible signs, but they don’t actually convey any spiritual grace in and of themselves.
But even mere symbols and reminders are very important things. We are creatures of sight and sense, and we can often be forgetful. Sacramentals serve as tangible reminders of God’s presence and keeping in our lives. They help us to remember God and to pray throughout our busy days. They help us to hallow the mundane and everyday. Sacramentals may not convey grace in themselves, but they can help to put us in the presence of mind to receive the grace of God through prayer at any time.
If you are a student, teacher, or school worker who didn’t get a tag and would like one, we have more available after Mass on Sunday. If you are interested in other kinds of sacramentals – the rosary, icons, etc. – please let me or Father Steve know, and we’d love to give you more information.

Christian Apologetics Starting September 5
|
Have you ever been challenged about the Christian Faith and had no idea how to respond? Starting in September, adult formation on Wednesday nights will focus on Christian Apologetics - making a defense of the Christian faith. We will look at all the common objections and discover the natural, philosophical, and theological truths to answer the critics. This is an important course to learn more about our faith and how to intelligently and faithfully share it.

From the Sheepfold | Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
|
|
Many thanks to all who attended last week's orientation session for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in our new Atrium! We welcome parents of children ages 3 through 3rd grade and their children to join us this week (9/2) after the 9am service for another chance to get a sneak peak of this lovely space and to learn more about the methodology behind this beautiful work. The former PreK Nursery (C-2) has been transformed into a space for our children and adults alike to grow in God's love. We will host two remaining orientations for families, this Sunday 9/2 and Sunday 9/9. Children will begin in C-3 (former Godly Play space) and parents will meet in C-5 and come together in the new Atrium by the conclusion of the gathering. Orientation sessions last about 45 minutes.

Eagle Scout Project | Society of St Joseph of Arimathea
|
|
Greetings St Timothy’s, My name is Kadin Martin and I have been working with Father Steve and St Timothy’s to complete my Eagle Scout Project. My project involves the construction of a tri-post pergola and ceremonial bell as an entranceway to the newly formed infant/children burial ground at St Timothy’s.
The Society of St Joseph of Arimathea was created in December of 2016, it's purpose is to aide in the burial of infants and children; both those that are unclaimed and those with families who cannot afford burial services. Originally, the Society of St Joseph of Arimathea only aided families financially, but a physical graveyard has been subsequently created for these infants’ remains. Having been a premature infant myself and having witnessed my mother’s commitment to these infants and families, I too feel compelled to contribute. This project will be beneficial to the infants and their families by providing a beautiful place of remembrance and a proper burial to unclaimed infants who otherwise would not receive this service.
I will be patterning this structure after the existing pergola that marks the original graveyard on the church grounds. If funds in excess of minimal amount necessary to construct the pergola can be generated, I would very much like to include beautifying stonework and landscaping. I intend to begin working on this project this fall. Carrabba’s Italian Grille has generously offered to donate single serve lasagnas to help fund my project. The lasagna’s are single serving size and come with extra sauce and cheese. Then suggested donation price is $10/each. I will be taking pre-orders on Wednesday evenings 9/5/18 and 9/12/18 and final orders on Sunday 9/16/18 with a tentative delivery/pick up date 9/23/18.
Thank you all so much for the wonderful support, Kadin.

Welcome Ministry | Becky Johnston
|
|
The Welcome Ministry would love your help! We are looking to recruit new volunteers to help us on Sunday mornings. Specifically, we need new Ushers and Greeters.
Ushers: distribute worship bulletins, help collect the offering, assist with the flow of communion, get an attendance count, and help identify visitors.
Greeters: help newcomers in any way needed, direct guests with children to the appropriate classrooms, make sure welcome desk is stocked with guest bags and distribute those as needed, introduce visitors to staff, assist ushers as needed.
We would love to hear from you if these are areas where you’d like to serve! Find us in the narthex after the service- or email [email protected] if you are interested.

Why do we report giving and attendance?
Following Jesus Christ is about faith and not figures. However, figures do shed some light on how we are living out our faith. There are many places in the Gospel where Jesus makes the connection between one's spiritual health and their relationship with monetary wealth. Generosity is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5.22). By reporting the giving, we shed light on the practicalities of supporting ministry and mission and these numbers remind us of our responsibility in generously giving to the spread of God's kingdom. The same is true with attendance. We have to be present to receive the Sacraments. Our priorities are best demonstrated by our bodies. If we want to see what matters the most to a person - we look at where their spend and where they stand.

Give by Text -
336-697-6543
|
|
This is amazing. I never have cash or a check, but I always have my phone. You can now give to the work of St Timothy's just by texting. Here's how it works:
1. Text an amount to
336-697-6543
2. You will be sent a link to set up your debit/credit card (take a few seconds)
3. Once complete, your transaction will go through and you number will always be associated with the card.
Plus, you can text "Funds" to see a specific fund. If you want to sponsor a lamp, you can text "25 st timothys" and it will go the St Timothy's Lamp, etc. If the fund isn't recognized, you'll get a list of all the funds and you text back the number of the fund you wish to give to
PS: This is not connected to your phone bill. It it connected to a card of your choice.

Holiness of Beauty | Capital Campaign

The Church was constructed in 2000 at a cost of $1,200,000. Adjusted for inflation, that number is $1,791,391.00, $109,459 less than what we’ve raised so far. Well done! We still have a relatively low number of pledges and gifts. Imagine what we can do.
