This Week at St Timothy's
Episcopal Church
July 3, 2018
|
|
Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"On that day people will throw away to the moles and to the bats their idols of silver and gold, which they made for themselves to worship"
Isaiah 2.20
I have searched Holy Writ looking for guidance on the winged creatures of the night and this is all I've found. We do, indeed, have bats at St Timothy's. For years we have dealt with the occasional sighting and less than two years ago we had extensive work done in the church to remove and prevent any bats in our buildings.
However, due to a warping roof vent and a new, industrious species of bat in our area, they have returned. We have been in constant contact with our new best friends, McNeely Pest Control, and we have contracted them to install the latest and greatest in prevention which will both secure the roof vent and guarantee no bats of any variety for the next ten years. But it's not that easy. Bats are a protected species and McNeely must secure state permission to do any work to avoid disturbing the life cycle of the bats. We hope that permission will be granted by Monday and we are first on McNeely's list.
Therefore, Sunday's worship schedule will be as follows:
- 7:30 in the Chapel
- 9:00 in Drake Hall
- 11:00 in the Chapel
We are excited to see how we can transform Drake Hall into a worship space. It will be different and, I trust, energizing. The music, liturgy, everything will be as normal, but in a new environment.
If you would like to help set-up Drake Hall on Thursday or Friday, please send me an email (
[email protected]).
Bats will not keep us from adoring Our Lord and coming together on His Day!

|
The office will be closed for July 4.
Independence Day is a Prayer Book Feast and will be kept with Morning Prayer and Mass in the Chapel at 8am.
Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Note About General Convention | Fr Steve
|
|
General Convention, the triennial gathering of elected deputies and bishops, begins today. There will undoubtedly be articles and headlines of the Episcopal Church voting on something sensational. Just today in the Winston-Salem Journal has a story from the Washington Post entitled "Is God Male? The Episcopal Church debates whether to change its Book of Common Prayer." It's a sensational and unhelpful headline (the Christian tradition has never said God the Father is male). No matter what headlines come from General Convention, we will do what we always do - keep the faith, celebrate the Sacraments, and work to the build the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. We hold the "faith once delivered to all the saints" (Jude 3) and shall continue in this path. Let us pray for our bishops and our deputies and let us pray for the work and unity of the Church.
|
|
Lord Jesus Christ,
who hast built thy Church
upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets:
mercifully grant that building upon thee, the chief
cornerstone, with beauty and substance,
we may raise here at St Timothy's a
faithful people and a holy temple to thy glory.
May we and generations yet to come learn to praise thee
more and more in spirit and in truth.
Amen.

From the Choir Loft | Robert Matthews

|
Choral Scholar Christopher Ervin will sing Sunday’s communion solo: “Quia fecit mihi magna” from J. S. Bach’s Magnificat, BWV 243. Bach set his Magnificat for mixed choir, soloists, and orchestra. The complete work, about thirty minutes in length, consists of eleven movements for the text of Luke 1:46–55, concluded by a twelfth doxology movement. In Bach’s time, the feast day of the Visitation fell on July 2, and his Magnificat may have been performed on July 2, 1733, as part of the church service in the St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) in Leipzig.
The baritone solo “Quia fecit mihi magna” is the fifth movement, and the English translation of the text is: “For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name” (Luke 1:49). Listen for how Bach used extended melismas (many notes on a single syllable) to emphasize important words: “potens” (mighty), “magna” (great), and “sanctum” (holy). Also, as one would expect in the Baroque period, there is a dance-like quality to the movement’s tempo and rhythm that conveys the exuberance of Mary’s song. Click
here to hear the aria.

Every single day we pray for those on our parish prayer list. You are welcome to add names each Sunday to the list in the narthex or you may do so online by clicking
here. Please note this list is not a request for pastoral care. To speak to a member of the clergy and/or request counseling, visits, and/or a sacrament, please call or email Fr Steve Rice or Fr DJ Griffin directly.

Our altars in the Church and Chapel are adorned weekly with flowers beautifully arranged by St. Timothy’s Flower Guild. Frequently the flowers are given in honor and/or memory of loved ones. The suggested donation to sponsor the flowers is $60. Is there a date coming up when you would like to honor someone or remember someone with a flower dedication? If so, please contact Ellen Turner at [email protected].
Also, are you interested in assisting the Flower Guild in arranging the flowers? If so, please contact Lea Thullbery at [email protected].

The Society of St Joseph of Arimathea
|
|
The
Society of St Joseph of Arimathea (SoJA) began in December 2016 at St Timothy's. Our mission is to provide funds and space for the burial of children. SoJA has helped 13 families in the burial of their children by covering the cost of cremation. We are also creating a place for burial and national shrine for this ministry. Read
this article published in The Living Church for more information.

St Michael Law Enforcement Chapel
|
|
The St Michael Law Enforcement Chapel is a place of prayer (chapel) and rest (hospice) for members of our law enforcement community and first responders. The Chapel is located directly below the narthex and is accessible 24/7 via keypad. The kitchen is restocked daily thanks to financial donations from friends and members (we make a regular Costco run with a list of our officer's favorite items). We also provide devotional items for our officers, especially St Michael pendants. To date, 34 officers are wearing the pendants and numerous others wear the St Michael velcro patch.

Why do we report giving and attendance?
Following Jesus Christ is about faith and not figures. However, figures do shed some light on how we are living out our faith. There are many places in the Gospel where Jesus makes the connection between one's spiritual health and their relationship with monetary wealth. Generosity is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5.22). By reporting the giving, we shed light on the practicalities of supporting ministry and mission and these numbers remind us of our responsibility in generously giving to the spread of God's kingdom. The same is true with attendance. We have to be present to receive the Sacraments. Our priorities are best demonstrated by our bodies. If we want to see what matters the most to a person - we look at where their spend and where they stand.

Give by Text -
336-697-6543
|
|
This is amazing. I never have cash or a check, but I always have my phone. You can now give to the work of St Timothy's just by texting. Here's how it works:
1. Text an amount to
336-697-6543
2. You will be sent a link to set up your debit/credit card (take a few seconds)
3. Once complete, your transaction will go through and you number will always be associated with the card.
Plus, you can text "Funds" to see a specific fund. If you want to sponsor a lamp, you can text "25 st timothys" and it will go the St Timothy's Lamp, etc. If the fund isn't recognized, you'll get a list of all the funds and you text back the number of the fund you wish to give to
PS: This is not connected to your phone bill. It it connected to a card of your choice.
