Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve

Introducing Reverend Ray Mims
The Session and Transition Team are pleased to announce that Reverend Ray Mims has accepted our call and will join our staff on March 1, 2016, serving as our transitional minister.
Ray requests that we use the title "Transitional Minister" and not "interim", since "Transitional" implies a movement forward, whereas "interim" can imply "just" filling a gap.
Five facts about Ray:
  1. Ray is a second-career minister. He received his Master of Divinity degree at Duke in 1999, and was ordained in 2000 as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA).  Prior to being ordained, Ray had a twenty-year career in non-profit administration. This prior experience in the business world has given Ray a unique perspective in helping churches successfully navigate periods of change and transition.
  2. Ray is an "intentional" interim. His calling is to help churches during periods of transition. As a result, we are the 8th church Ray has served in this capacity in the past 16 years.  On his resume', Ray said the following: "My training and experience in interim ministry has equipped me to lead congregations through a period of self-assessment, conflict resolution, needs analysis and the visioning of possibilities for the future."
  3. Ray and his wife, Dr. Sharon Sims (Assistant Professor, UNC-G) are the parents of four children. The youngest just graduated from UNC-Wilmington. They also have two grandchildren. They live in Julian, NC (Guilford County), so the Greensboro area is "home."
  4. Ray is active in Salem Presbytery. He currently serves on the Committee on Ministry and is extremely well-respected in our area. After the vote in which the Committee on Ministry approved Ray's call to Starmount, many members of the committee expressed how great a "fit" they felt that Ray would be to our congregation during this period.
  5. Ray is a "servant leader."  In his resume, he expressed the following: "My leadership style is as a servant-leader, focused on facilitating and assisting individuals in discovering and utilizing their own skills for ministry....In my ministry, I seek to follow the advice of Dietrich Bonheoffer: "when we come among a new people, we must honor the Christ who is already present among them." I lead by articulating a vision of what is means to be children of God, working together in building Christ' kingdom of love, justice and grace."
The Transition Team has appreciated your prayers, comments, introductions made to others, advice and kind words during this period of transition. We have felt the hand of God leading us through this process. One piece of evidence is that all of the votes to call Ray (Transition Team, Commission on Ministry, Session) were unanimous.  We definitely believe that Ray is the right person to lead us through this next phase in the life of our church. Please continue to pray for us as we begin work on the mission study that will serve as the guide for the future Pastoral Nominating Committee.
Grace and Peace,
The Transition Team
