PJ Library Yom Kippur Puppet Show 
Lappin Foundation invites families to a special PJ Library Yom Kippur puppet show for children, ages 3-8, with puppeteer Anna Sobel on Friday, September 25th at 4 pm. Sam looks square. Some kids say he looks like a certain sea sponge with square pants. Luke looks like a triangle. His best friend Josh is the only Jewish kid in the class. Luke and Josh have been making fun of Sam. But when Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur roll around, Josh discovers that the hardest part of making up for your mistakes is saying sorry.

Lappin Teen Fellows
Jewish high school students are invited to be Lappin Teen Fellows. Fellows will meet for interactive learning sessions led by dynamic presenters exploring the impact of contemporary issues on Jewish teens. Sessions will be held on Sundays from 6:30 - 7:30 pm on Zoom on the following dates: October 18, November 8, December 6 and January 31. Topics include: Jewish diversity, Antisemitism, Jewish identity, Israel and more. Lappin Teen Fellows is free and open to Jewish teens in high school. For more information contact Sharon Wyner at  (978) 565-4450.  Register here for the Zoom link for this program or visit LappinFoundation.org.

What We Can Do About Antisemitism
The community is invited to a discussion about antisemitism and what we can do about it on Wednesday, October 7th at 7:30 pm. The discussion will be facilitated by Adam Milstein, community leader and philanthropist. Bringing Our Community Together Even When We’re Not!

We did it! We have proven that we can continue to create meaningful connections even when we are not together.  
We reached out to all of our TAA members with a sweet little Rosh Hashanah gift bag.  
It took a community to achieve this.

We needed many volunteers and the able assistance of Natalia to make it all happen.

There is no way to put into words the thank you that goes to Natalia Carollo. Natalia single-handedly gathered the materials, created the lovely Shana Tova card and filled the bags with all the contents. Then she organized the bags so that our 31 volunteers could deliver them. 

And, those 31 volunteers? We cannot thank you enough for eagerly stepping forward to deliver the sweet little gift bags to our members. Making the deliveries was as meaningful and community building as receiving them!

Thank you to: Adena Geller, Arley Pett, Ashley Serotta, Barry Gradwohl, Beth Gordon, Beverly Bookin, Carmel Valianti and daughter Maya, Debbie Hilbert, Ed Howe, Edith Jacobs, Elaine Byrne, Eric Kaplan, Gretchen Putnam, Irma Cohen, Irma Kahle, Judy Bogage, Judy Rose, Leigh Eck, Nancy Bain, Neil Glickstein, Rich Huttner, Ron Newman, Sam Silverman, Sara Roizen, Sue Adams, Susan Federspiel and Bruce and Anne Siegel, who along with the three of us, Gary Coltin, Ruth Budelmann, Amy Farber (co-chairs of the project), made these deliveries with big smiles, underneath those masks of course!

In addition, Phoebe Potts made over 25 gift bag deliveries to families with children, donned in an apple costume and carrying a huge shofar. (See the photo below!)
At the request of Debbie Coltin and Laila Goodman, our leaders for the High Holiday Children's Services, these bags included special items to be used during those special services.

We will miss seeing you all in person for the High Holidays and look forward to joining you at our virtual services.

Operation Isaiah
What sort of fast does G-d require of us on Yom Kippur? The Prophet Isaiah’s answer is startling and clear:
 
Is such the fast I desire,
A day for men to starve their bodies?
[Is it bowing the head like a bulrush
And lying in sackcloth and ashes?]
Do you call that a fast…?
 
No, this is the fast I desire:
To unlock the fetters of wickedness,
And untie the cords of the yoke
To let the oppressed go free;
To break off every yoke.
 It is to share your bread with the hungry…
 
To honor Isaiah’s words, it has long been our congregation’s custom to bring food for The Open Door, Cape Ann's Food Pantry on the evening of Kol Nidre.
 
This year, when the pandemic keeps us from meeting and has shut down many jobs, there is more hunger than ever on Cape Ann. Please send a contribution to the Food Pantry - here is how.

Ten-year-old Avery Green loves science. He loves football. He is crazy about Star Wars. But Hebrew school? No, thank you. Avery would rather have his arms sliced off with a lightsaber than sit through one more day of Hebrew School. He's only asked about a million times why he has to go, but no one in his family has managed to convince him. 

For 3rd graders to adults, and anyone who has ever asked the question: "Why do I have to go to Hebrew School?"
Casey will be reading a selection of her book and will be interviewed by actual live Hebrew school students!
