THE CHURCH CONFRONTS THE WORLD

From the Pastor...

In both the Old Testament reading for this week and the Gospel we see a vivid picture of what happens when the truth of God's Word confronts a world that is "out of plumb", or not straight or "in line" with God's clear will and purpose.

In our Old Testament reading the Lord tells Amos the prophet that He is setting a plumb line in the midst of His people Israel. It is a word of judgement against a nation that had turned away from the true God to worship the golden calves that had been set up by King Jereboam at Bethel and Dan. The plumb line is none other than the Word of God which like a sharp two-edged sword cuts through the posturing of the king and his agents to define the apostasy of God's people.

The political response to the message Amos delivers is to drive Amos away, back to the land of Judah. The world does not want to listen to the voice of the Lord, to the message of truth.

John the Baptizer discovers the same kind of opposition when he denounces the sin of King Herod and Herodias. Herodias nurtures a grudge against John, indeed she wants to kill him and when the opportunity to take vengeance on John presents itself, she asks for his head on a platter and John is put to death.

But John's voice and the voice of truth will not be silenced. Jesus took up the message of John and proclaimed that message of repentance and forgiveness in an uncompromising way. The world would try to silence Him also, but He rose victorious from death and passed that responsibility to His disciples - "teaching them everything that I have commanded you".

Today our society and culture are post-Christian in the extreme. The world around us will continue to resist the Church holding up the truth of God's Word as a plumb line to what they do and think. That resistance will surely intensify as the gulf widens as we have seen in the recent Supreme Court ruling. Opposition might become persecution. We should not be surprised however. It has always been the same as both Amos and John the Baptizer discovered. We can trust firmly in the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit to help us as we speak the truth in love.

Mission Trip Support Needed

Regular Timothy attenders, Cody Krech and Chelsea Everley are members of an upcoming medical mission trip through a Colorado based group called International Medical Relief. They are traveling to the rainforest in Nicaragua to provide healthcare to remote communities and the Rama Indian Tribes. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Following some unexpected expenses including rental of sterilized dental kits, medical supplies, and international malpractice insurance they are attempting to raise approximately $1,000 by July 31, 2105, when they leave for the trip. So far they have raised $90 through a GoFundMe account.

Here is the link to the Go Fund Me Account.

Cody will be acting in his role as a dentist, and Chelsea a nurse practitioner while in Nicaragua August 1-10, 2015.

Any possible support from the congregation, whether financially, or through prayers for safe travels and while there, would be greatly appreciated.
