This Sunday is “Trinity Sunday”, and the music for this wonderful day in our liturgical year is plentiful and rich. It’s actually challenging to choose just a few hymns when there are so many great choices. One of my true favorites, introduced to me by Lisa Mages when I first began at Trinity, is St. Patrick’s Breastplate: I Bind Unto Myself Today the Strong Name of the Trinity. We will close our worship this week with this stately and powerful hymn, and our opening hymn will be the old favorite, Holy, Holy, Holy. You will see that our choir’s offertory anthem bears the same title. This one, though, is the work of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, best known for Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Yes, that guy!
Tchaikovsky also had a true passion for the Russian Orthodox liturgy and sacred music, calling it “one of my deepest joys”. Though he struggled with the dogma of the church, liturgical music was his connection to God. He began to compose sacred music for the church, but the Saint Petersburg Court Chapel (known as the Imperial Chapel) had a monopoly on the composition and performance of sacred music and refused to give him permission to write any new church music. Tchaikovsky did it anyway after consulting with the Moscow Office of Sacred Censorship, but the Imperial Chapel banned his music and sued the publisher of this new music. This was the catalyst for the Most Holy Synod (the highest governing body in the Russian Orthodox Church) to rule that the censorship office could approve any new sacred music publication without the Imperial Chapel’s consent, thus removing the monopoly on sacred music in Russia and opening the door for Russian composers to write sacred music freely.
In 1885, Tchaikovsky completed his Nine Sacred Pieces (Devyat’ dukhovnokhoternykh sochineniy), and the first piece, Cherubic Hymn No. 1 was based on the Orthodox Cherubic Hymn sung in Orthodox liturgy for centuries. Tchaikovsky’s adaptation for choir, which will be sung by our choir this week, is known as Hymn to the Holy Trinity/Holy, Holy, Holy. It is a moving anthem with telltale Russian musical elements (listen for those low notes in the bass section!), and it is not only a celebration of our Holy Trinity, but also a poignant reminder that sacred music often has a greater story to tell.
See you on Sunday!

Last week in Church School, we celebrated the diversity of God’s family! We explored the story of Pentecost and learned how the Holy Spirit came to each of us, helping us to be lights in the world. We enjoyed learning how to say “May God bless you” in languages different from our own.
Looking ahead to this week, we will continue learning about the early Church. Paul was one of the early Church leaders and wrote several letters to different church communities to help them grow in God’s love for one another.
Together, we will brainstorm ways we communicate with one another today and explore how those ways are similar to, different from communication in the early Church. The children will also write their own Church School letter to Trinity. Be on the lookout for what our children want to share with us about God’s love!
Just a reminder that Church School will continue through June 14th. We look forward to celebrating our time together over the next few weeks.
Blessings,
The Rev Allison Brown

Starting June 1st- Mondays and Saturdays at 10:30am at the Gazebo.
Stroller Cardio, Sculpt & Strength is a program created for moms (and pregnant mamas to be), to exercise with their little ones in strollers. This workout class combines total body exercises, core, and cardio. It offers a chance for women to rebuild strength, connection, and community. No equipment needed, a water bottle and a towel are encouraged.
Safety and Details: For the safety of everyone attending class, the children are required to remain securely strapped into the stroller for the entire 30-40 min workout. Please bring any snacks, toys, etc., to keep kids engaged. We understand babies are on their own schedule sometimes, so the feeding, changing, etc. can be done before or after the workout. Please dress yourself and child according to weather.
