Providing Teens with a Vacation Experience at Home
Olathe Public Library
|
|
Because many teens were unable to travel during spring break, the team at Olathe Public Library created an at-home vacation experience with new Staycation Kits themed around international travel and a U.S. road trip. The team developed suitcase kits stocked with travel materials, companion videos (International, U.S.) for five days of travel and Padlet pages (International, U.S.) complete with links to local restaurants, recipes for area foods, books, music and craft activities. Staff were able to participate by creating videos or presentations on their home state or country.
Through a virtual passport, teens were able to enter a unique fact they learned or activity they completed during their travels and turn it in at the end of the week for a prize. The Staycation Kits were developed and distributed thanks to the library's Teen Services team, consisting of staff members Whitney Horn, Laurenjoy Graves, Kelly Darling, Molly Vazquez and Angela Parks.
One teen provided the following feedback:
The Spring Break Staycation was so much fun! I loved trying a new food from each country every day and exploring and painting the fine arts from an artist from that country. I especially loved the little madeleine cake from France, and painting Germany’s “The Tree of Life” tree by Gustav Klimt. Being able to ‘visit’ a new country each day was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit!
