Submissions are officially open for ULC's 2020 Innovations Initiative! The annual awards program celebrates and showcases the transformational leadership of ULC libraries in addressing race and social equity in our communities, furthering education for people of all ages, building digital equity for tomorrow’s workforce and enhancing civic engagement for a strong democracy. ULC will announce the Top Innovator and Honorable Mention award winners in each category during a virtual event this fall.

As we approach the end of summer, ULC's action teams continue to forge ahead in developing strategies for libraries to address the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our libraries. One strategy our action teams are grappling with involves how to access and understand public library data to continuously improve library services that align with community needs. ULC President and CEO Susan Benton was recently profiled in her role as a member of the COSLA/IMLS Public Library Data Alliance. Read the profile to learn more about how data is very much oriented to the impact of what the library does in helping move the community forward.

Annual BookFest Launches Virtually
Broward County Library

Starting this week, Broward County Library's 15th Annual Children's BookFest is going online! Patrons of all ages can connect with authors and illustrators, attend book talks and compete in games and challenges two days a week for the next month.
Celebrating 30 Years of Calgary Pride
Calgary Public Library

This year, Calgary Public Library continues to mark the 30th anniversary of Calgary Pride Library even though the pandemic has prevented in-person celebrations. The library is hosting a series of special community events and providing patrons with access to curated LGBTQIA+ reading lists.
Weekly Conversational English Class Thrives Online
Oak Park Public Library

Before the pandemic, English language learners in Oak Park came together at the library once a week to work towards fluency with the guidance of volunteer conversation facilitators. Now, the group continues to blossom as the weekly meetings have shifted online via Zoom. “The collaboration between staff, volunteers and patrons to make connections and foster learning at these meetings is stellar,” said Manager of Adult Services Alexandra Skinner.
