We've all heard we should "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle," but did you know there's a reason they're listed in that order? Recycling substantially decreases the need for virgin natural resources and creates jobs (10 to 1 when compared to landfill jobs). But reducing what we consume and the waste we produce, and reusing what we already have, makes a much bigger impact on our personal carbon footprint than recycling. Here are a few easy changes we can all make right now:
Reduce: Think of purchases as investments and buy durable, high-quality goods so they last, and fix/mend them when they are showing wear. Even better, link a big purchase with an important accomplishment or milestone so it also has sentimental value.
Reuse: Donate to and shop at the WCUCC Rummage sale!
Recycle: If you buy beverages in glass or plastic bottles, switch to aluminum cans. Cans require a lot less energy for recycling.
