This Thursday: Corpus Christi

On the Feast of Corpus Christi, this Thursday, June 19, the Rev'd Blake Sawicky, Curate at S Stephen's, Providence, and campus minister to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, will preach at the Solemn High Mass. A festive reception follows!
Celebration for Bishop Shaw
All members of the Diocese of Massachusetts are invited to a celebration of the Holy Eucharist and Picnic to honor Bishop Shaw on Saturday, June 21, from 10:30 AM to 1 PM. Former Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold will preach and there will be remarks from retired Suffragan Bishop Barbara Harris. This event will take place, rain or shine, at the Pinebark Promontory on Jamaica Pond, which is at the corner of Perkins Street and the Jamaicaway. Bring a picnic lunch. Ice cream and drinks will be provided.

The remembrance book for Bishop Shaw that we have been compiling will be available after the Masses this coming Sunday. This is your last opportunity to contribute to the book!
Orchestral Mass on Sunday, June 22
Igor Stravinsky
The Choir and Orchestra of The Church of the Advent will offer Igor Stravinsky's Mass for Chorus and Double Wind Quintet at 11:15 am on Sunday, June 22nd. Stravinsky chose to compose this Western rite Mass despite his own Russian Orthodox faith. He stated that this was because: "I wanted my Mass to be used liturgically, an outright impossibility as far as the Russian Church was concerned, as Orthodox tradition proscribes musical instruments in its services; and as I can endure unaccompanied singing in only the most harmonically primitive music." Under the direction of guest conductor Donald Teeters, Conductor Emeritus of the Boston Cecilia, this is a unique opportunity to experience the Mass in its liturgical context, as the composer intended. This mass has been given by a generous parishioner in memory of Marc Michelini, our long-time Verger. It also marks the opening of the 2014 American Guild of Organists National Convention being held in Boston. Coincidentally, the Boston premiere of the work occurred at the 1950 AGO National Convention, conducted by Alfred Nash Patterson, then Organist & Choirmaster of The Church of the Advent!
Praying the Daily Office
Can You Help? Morning Prayer is prayed here at the Church of the Advent seven days a week: Sundays at 7:30 AM, Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM, Saturdays and holidays at 8:30 AM. This is a wonderful and appropriate way to begin the day, for the Clergy especially, but also for the others who attend the service.

Evening Prayer is scheduled to be prayed at 5:30 PM Monday through Friday. Because of evening programs and pastoral responsibilities, it is becoming more and more difficult for the Clergy alone to maintain these Monday through Friday services, and so we badly need volunteers to conduct Evening Prayer if the present schedule is to continue.

Think about this, and if you are able to take on one of these evening services, please speak to Fr Warren or Fr Wood.
B-SAFE Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for Advent Week at B-SAFE in Dorchester. Our parish has signed up to host a field trip and provide lunch for the kids and staff at the B-SAFE (Bishops' Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment) Program at the Epiphany School in Dorchester on July 1 - 3. We need someone to coordinate this project, as well as a big team of volunteers - Can you help? To volunteer to work on this project or help coordinate it, contact Fr Wood by email or 617.697.8528.
Consecration of the 16th Bishop
The Rev'd Alan Gates will be consecrated as the 16th Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts on Saturday, September 13, at 11:00 AM. The service will take place in Boston University's Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Avenue. You must have a ticket to attend. They are, of course, free, and may be obtained by calling 617-482-4826 ext 687, or by going to the Diocesan website, www.diomass.org
Good News from Jason & Gretchen Grant!
Jason Grant reports:

On Friday morning, May 30, we celebrated Gretchen's final radiation treatment! Except for Gretchen's taking a long-term medicine and having regular check-ups, it's a wrap for cancer treatments for us! Here, you can see us ringing "the bell" that morning at the hospital to celebrate finishing up treatment!

Thank you, everyone, so much, for all of your support, loving thoughts, and prayers during this past year. We were so touched. You made this year special even though there were many difficult parts.

We made it!!

Our love,

Gretchen, Jason, and Clara
Welcome Selma Jane Lewis!
Jason and Carolyn Shadid Lewis announce the birth of Selma Jane Lewis, born at 8:59 p.m. on Friday, June 6.

Selma weighed in at 8 pounds, 10 ounces, and her father reports that she "exhibited a keen sense of both historical reverence and subtle irony by being born on the 70th anniversary of D-Day."

We look forward to meeting our newest parishioner soon!

Sunday's Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity: We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see thee in thy one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
