As we continue to focus on Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness this month, "We Learn" is the focus for this week.
When it comes to learning, people can have either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that our skills and abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This type of mindset creates a love of learning, resilience, and helps us embrace challenges. It can be challenging to teach a growth mindset. It takes time and effort but pays off.
One way to teach a growth mindset is through the power of yet: when faced with a challenge or failure, remind yourself you haven't learned how to do …...yet. We challenge you to remind your students that instead of saying "I can't do this" say "I can't do this, yet."
As parents we can help develop a growth mindset by praising the process, not the person - Dr. Carol Dweck stated, “praising the process that kids engage in: their efforts, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance, their improvement, this process of praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient.”
