Message from Mr. Hill

Welcome back to another wonderful week at The Creek! We have had some awesome things happening around the school and I hope to accurately summarize them here.

  • Belonging Presentation

As mentioned in the newsletter on September 3rd, the Administration teamed up with the WMS Social Studies department to teach and discuss the importance of belonging and how our words can be damaging OR have the ability to create spaces of belonging. It was so fun to spend time engaging with our wonderful students and talk with them about how we can improve Willowcreek.

  • Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The Willowcreek Administrative and Counseling Teams are working to provide teaching moments and engaging experiences to teach students about Adolecdent Mental Health and Suicide Awareness. Some of the content including videos we have been showing to outline resources to students and community can be found on our school Instagram account. We are truly trying to lean on the WMS Mission Statement: "We Inspire, We Learn, We Belong" to scaffold our messaging. If you would like to learn more, we will be hosting a small Adolescent Mental Health Night in conjunction with Parent Teacher Conferences on September 26th from 3:30-6:30. There will be information/community resources as well as mini-presentations to discuss Adolescent Mental Health.

  • National Hispanic Heritage Month

We have some amazing students from other countries who are excited to share their culture. We will continue to acknowledge the contributions of these students and learn about them throughout the month.

Thank you. Willowcreek is an amazing place with phenomenal people, I appreciate you entrusting us with your students everyday--their smiles and enthusiasm rejuvenate me daily!

Attending High School Sporting Events

With High School Sports in full swing, we wanted to remind partnes of how crucial their support and involvement is. In anticipation of the upcoming Lehi vs Skyridge football game, Skyridge High School administration has sent a communication about non-high school kids attending games.

If your students attend any high school sporting events, please take the time to read the communication linked below.

From the Counseling Department

As we continue to focus on Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness this month, "We Learn" is the focus for this week.

When it comes to learning, people can have either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that our skills and abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This type of mindset creates a love of learning, resilience, and helps us embrace challenges. It can be challenging to teach a growth mindset. It takes time and effort but pays off.

One way to teach a growth mindset is through the power of yet: when faced with a challenge or failure, remind yourself you haven't learned how to do …...yet. We challenge you to remind your students that instead of saying "I can't do this" say "I can't do this, yet."

As parents we can help develop a growth mindset by praising the process, not the person - Dr. Carol Dweck stated, “praising the process that kids engage in: their efforts, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance, their improvement, this process of praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient.”
