VIRTUAL
CLOSING LUNCHEON!

featuring
Dr. Jeremiah Murphy
12:00 – 1:30 p.m.
Via Zoom

REGISTRATION DEADLINE, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 12:00 NOON

In 1915, Albert Einstein completed his theory of General Relativity, one of the most enduring and transformational theories of all of physics. His theory is based upon a few simple observations and statements. First, motions are relative; second, the speed of light is constant; third, the acceleration you feel in a rocket is equivalent to gravity’s acceleration on Earth. While simple, these statements profoundly changed our understanding of the Universe. Space and time are not constants of reality; rather they are relative and intimately connected. Gravity is not a force but the warping of spacetime, which in turn leads to the prediction of black holes and gravitational waves. In this presentation, we will explore how these simple, yet profound statements lead to these predictions. We will also learn how Einstein’s theory of General Relativity has endured more than a century of experiments, making it one of the most successful theories of human history. Professor Jeremiah Murphy is an astrophysicist in the Physics Department at Florida State University. His expertise is in stellar explosions, neutron stars, and black holes.

GET YOUR FLU SHOT
EARLY!
To protect yourself, your family, and your friends, getting a flu vaccine this year is more important than ever! We are facing a challenging 2020-2021 influenza season with COVID-19 spreading at the same time.

For information about where flu shots will be offered
for the
Tallahassee Senior Center Flu Resource Card
Older adults and those with underlying health conditions are at the highest risk for complications from influenza. While the flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, it is still a good idea because it enhances your ability to combat other infections. There is no evidence that getting a flu vaccine will increase your risk of getting COVID-19. Remember that wearing a face mask, practicing physical distancing, washing your hands frequently, and coughing into your elbow are other ways to protect yourself and prevent spread of COVID-19 and the flu.
The CDC recommends that everyone six months or older get a flu shot, and they should get it before the end of October. For those that got vaccinated early (in July or August), particularly older adults, there may be reduced protection against flu infection later in the season.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health department about which type of vaccine is best for you, and if they are following CDC’s vaccination pandemic guidance.

Brainteaser Challenge
Let's keep our minds challenged and active!

Here's a challenging Brainteaser, Mysterious Loss, submitted to Braingle.com by Taya.

At a train station in Sydney, Australia, an intelligent rich man was awaiting his upper class rail transport. He was sorting through his wallet and pulled out credit cards, receipts, and $200 in cash.
An egotistical scam artist (and a talented one at that) approached the man and said to him, "I'll bet you, on all the money in your wallet, that I can get a packet of chips out of that snack machine without inserting any money!"
The rich man, who was intrigued by this 'talent', readily agreed.
The scam artist walked over to the snack dispenser, stuck his hand up through the compartments, and a chip packet fell out.
The rich man was amazed, but being a faithful businessman, stuck to his word, yet the scam artist walked off without a penny.

Share your answer with Nancy O'Pry Gentry, Special Projects Coordinator at Nancy.Gentry@talgov.com
The first three people to answer correctly will get a "shout out" during the next

Need Medicare Guidance?
SHINE Program (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is federally funded and our services are offered through the Department of Elder Affairs and the local Area Agency on Aging. Year-round, a cadre of vetted and trained volunteer counselors assists clients in applying for Medicare and provide information to help them evaluate options for additional insurance. In addition, we also screen clients for eligibility for Medicaid and other financial assistance for medical and prescription drug costs and report Medicare Fraud and Abuse.

The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7 and allows those with existing Medicare plans to make changes in their supplemental insurance, prescription drug plans, or advantage plans if they so desire.
