JUPITER, SATURN, AND BEYOND
Taught by Dr. Steve Blumsack, this 3-session class will describe our current knowledge of the solar system beyond the planet Mars. Although no human has set foot on any of these bodies, telescopic observations plus flyby and orbital missions over the past 50 years, have provided immense understanding of these gas giants, dwarf planets, and moons. Significant time will be devoted to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, focusing on observations that relate to the possibility of life there, and to the recent exploration of objects in the Kuiper belt which lies beyond Neptune.

DID SOMEBODY SAY CANNABIS?
This program will be covering the basics of the Florida Medical Cannabis program. How to become a patient? What are the qualifying conditions who is eligible? This is a unique opportunity to hear the facts from Trulieve, a company which has helped to pioneer the Medical Cannabis industry in Florida since its inception in 2017. Learning about technological advances in Cannabis centric sciences will effectively promote change and breakdown the stigmas associated with today’s cannabis prohibition. Please come ready to learn in a fun and interactive environment and ask all your cannabis questions.

ALL ABOUT SHARKS
There are over 400 species of modern sharks. Marine biologist Leslie Breland, from the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, will enlighten participants on the lives, habits, and wide variety of these predators of the deep. Learn about their importance in the marine ecosystem and the threats that these animals face.

GET YOUR FLU SHOT
EARLY!
To protect yourself, your family, and your friends, getting a flu vaccine this year is more important than ever! We are facing a challenging 2020-2021 influenza season with COVID-19 spreading at the same time.

For information about where flu shots will be offered
for the Tallahassee Senior Center Flu Resource Card
Older adults and those with underlying health conditions are at the highest risk for complications from influenza. While the flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, it is still a good idea because it enhances your ability to combat other infections. There is no evidence that getting a flu vaccine will increase your risk of getting COVID-19. Remember that wearing a face mask, practicing physical distancing, washing your hands frequently, and coughing into your elbow are other ways to protect yourself and prevent spread of COVID-19 and the flu.
The CDC recommends that everyone six months or older get a flu shot, and they should get it before the end of October. For those that got vaccinated early (in July or August), particularly older adults, there may be reduced protection against flu infection later in the season.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health department about which type of vaccine is best for you, and if they are following CDC’s vaccination pandemic guidance.
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT
IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!
SHINE Program (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is federally funded and our services are offered through the Department of Elder Affairs and the local Area Agency on Aging. Year-round, a cadre of vetted and trained volunteer counselors assist clients with applying for Medicare and provide information to help them evaluate options for additional insurance. In addition, we also screen clients for eligibility for Medicaid and other financial assistance for medical and prescription drug costs and report Medicare Fraud and Abuse.

The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7 and allows those with existing Medicare plans to make changes in their supplemental insurance, prescription drug plans, or advantage plans if they so desire.
