National Doctors’ Day was first observed in Winder, Georgia, by the wife of a doctor to give others the opportunity to recognize and honor doctors who have impacted their lives. In 1958, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved a resolution to commemorate National Doctors’ Day on March 30, which President George Bush then signed into law in 1990. Survey data of practicing physicians indicate that prior authorization continues to interfere with patient care and can lead to adverse clinical consequences.

On March 17, 2023, nearly 43,000 medical school graduates will anxiously await the chance to continue their journey to become licensed physicians. But with just 40,375 available residency positions available, what will happen to the remaining 2,500 applicants that fail to match into a slot? While a lucky few may be able to ‘scramble’ into an open position, most will have no choice but to wait an entire year to reapply for the privilege of practicing medicine.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday proposed the first federal limits on harmful “forever chemicals” in drinking water, a long-awaited protection the agency said will save thousands of lives and prevent serious illnesses, including cancer.

On March 14, 2023, EPA announced the proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA, commonly known as GenX Chemicals), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS). The proposed PFAS NPDWR does not require any actions until it is finalized. EPA anticipates finalizing the regulation by the end of 2023. EPA expects that if fully implemented, the rule will prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of serious PFAS-attributable illnesses.

EPA is requesting public comment on the proposed regulation. The public comment period will open following the proposed rule publishing in the Federal Register. EPA will be holding a informational webinar about the proposed PFAS NDPWR on March 29, 2023. Registration is required to attend. EPA will also be holding a public hearing on May 4, 2023, where members of the public can register to attend and provide verbal comments to EPA on the rule proposal. The Big Bend Healthcare Coalition (BBHCC) Preparedness Plan has been developed to serve as the basic guidelines to describe how the BBHCC will act to fulfill its role, purpose and objectives identified within its designated scope. This plan documents the organization and process outlining used for the communication coordination and information sharing activities which is the primary role of the BBHCC. This includes coordinating these activities with the lead county ESF-8 agencies throughout the region. The methodology employed is consistent with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and provides guidance on how the BBHCC supports and executes its role and responsibilities in the preparedness, response, and recovery cycles of disaster management.

A former Panama City, Fla.-based NeuroMedical Institute physician, George Barrio, MD, has agreed to pay $225,000 to settle allegations that he engaged in unlawful prescribing of opioids to patients.

Although the US infant mortality rate reached a record low in 2020, the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rate increased from 2019. To understand if the increase was related to changing death certification practices or the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we examined sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) rates as a group, by cause, and by race and ethnicity.

Diet may reduce Alzheimer’s dementia risk and slow cognitive decline, but the understanding of the relevant neuropathologic mechanisms remains limited. The association of dietary patterns with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology has been suggested using neuroimaging biomarkers. This study examined the association of MIND and Mediterranean dietary patterns with beta-amyloid load, phosphorylated tau tangles, and global AD pathology in postmortem brain tissue of older adults.

Physicians face many obstacles in their quest to provide quality care to patients. Imagine if other professions had to deal with some of the same challenges.
