Four people have died as part of a multistate outbreak of drug-resistant infections linked to over-the-counter eyedrops, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.

In addition, 14 people have lost vision and another 10 required surgical removal of the eyeball, the CDC said.

The CDC has identified 81 patients in 18 states, including Florida, with the rare strain of P. aeruginosa bacteria. This represents an increase of 13 patients since the last update.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday signed into law a measure that increases the penalties for assault or battery of hospital personnel.

The average risk of three healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)— including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)—spiked to a 5-year high in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic and remain high, according to The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2023 Hospital Safety Grade data, released on May 3. The Safety Grades also show a continued decline in patient experience measures, which are reported by patients and correlated with patient outcomes.

The pay gap adds up – from $1.6 million to $3.1 million over a 40-year career, said the study, “Marriage, Children, and Sex-Based Differences in Physician Hours and Income,” published in JAMA Health Forum. The information is crucial now because more than half of medical students are woman who will join the workforce as large numbers of male physicians retire over the next 10 years.

The ability to prescribe controlled substances based on telehealth patient visits was set to expire when the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ends on Thursday, May 11^th. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) initially issued two proposed rules establishing new policies for controlled substance prescriptions based on telehealth visits, one for buprenorphine and one for other controlled substances. After receiving more than 38,000 comment letters, however, the DEA has decided to extend [federalregister.gov] the same policies that have been in place during COVID for an additional 6 months, until November 11, 2023.

·    The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission—regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration—on or after June 27, 2023.

·    There are multiple ways that practitioners can satisfy this new training requirement.

·    Treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or

·    Safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid and other substance use disorders.
